We have used them many times before but want to make sure before we use on a project that we took in today.

I have a very serious Civil War collector that brought in an old postcard type of photo of Abraham Lincoln's funeral car along with a piece of wood from this car. The piece of wood is small so I know that mylar will hold the weight, just want to make sure that there isn't a chance of long term damage from the mylar.

Any thoughts?

Since you've used this material before, you know that weight is seldom an issue with clear film mounting. However, we wouldn't want anyone unfamilair with it to get the impression that it is good only for lightweight mounting jobs.

Clear polyester film is very strong. For example, a baseball bat may be held securely by two 1/2" wide straps of Melinex 516, properly attached through slots to the back of the mount board.
