Anyone going to the WCAF Show?

I've never been to any of the shows so thought I'd try Vegas in January. From the way you all talk I can learn a lot and maybe pick up some bargains on equipment.

Hopefully run into a Grumbler or two.

I am, I am! My first time, too. Think they'll be gentle on us??

(Not!!)

How do we found out about available classes and get signed up for them? I registered a month or so ago, but haven't gotten any info yet. Wait...I believe I remember, now that I think about it, something being said upon registration that we would be notified about classes by e-mail around early November. Geeze...I guess I answered my own question didn't I?) Not sure though...anyone know for sure??

It's a great show. You'll love it! There is a lot of excitement on the show floor, and a lot to do at night.

I hear that it will be bigger this year, closer to the size of Atlanta.

Andy and I plan to go again.

There's an annual grumble dinner event at WCAF. (Limo ride for some world class family style Asian food) Last year our flights were such that we missed it, but this year we plan to attend.

Mike

I got some great deals on equipment from the atlanta show.Shop around first so you know what the stuff is worth.and everyone either came down on thier price or gave free shipping or added extras. It was Great! and I had dinner with a bunch of grumblers.I wanna do it again.Big fun

Mike the size of Atlanta? Before this year or this year? Cuz they are all shrinking. Atlanta did not do well this year. And from my understanding this Baltimore show is not completely on yet. A vendor said they were trying, but not a definite as of yet?! So who knows, I think three or four a year is a bit much. I know they cater to different areas, but they are hurting. Maybe try someplace in the middle and one a year? I dont know.

JANUARY CANNOT COME SOON ENOUGH. I'm so happy about going this year. DeAnne will be coming with me (kids staying with Granparents) so look out. I can't wait to meet you guys...

I bought my airline ticket in July! Do I win an early bird prize?

Last time I went I packed in so many classes that I didn't have time for the trade show, except for a whiirlwind look-see as I was being shooshed out the door to the airport.

This time I'm staying longer so can fit everything in.

As an FYI, the Hilton rates (if you mention the WCAFS) were $125 w/ a view of the strip and $105 without. Guess that means for the lower rate you get to look at the parking lot or dumpsters or somehting.

Sign me up for the limo ride.

Amy

The latest issue of PFM that came this week has a notice in it about a new WCAF website that is supposed to answer all our questions.
Same thing happened to me-I loaded up on classes and didn't have time to really check out the tradeshow. Also missed the Grumble dinner--but I'll get there this year!! I can't wait to go again--and I'm staying an extra day as well so I can check out that beautiful desert I kept seeing from the room!

Denny: I'll be going with a couple others from Superior. Lets stay in touch if you are planning on going!

Sounds good Scott. We are definately going. We plan to arrive Saturday Jan 27 and leave Friday Feb 2. When booking both airlines and hotel through Expedia, a note says the Hilton does not accept check-ins on the 27th. But if I try to book just the hotel on the Hilton's website, it appears not to be a problem.

This is going to be our annual vacation as well.

WCAF is the only trade show that has been growing every year since its debut in 2000. The synergy of last January's show was almost magical. Everybody was pleased with the turnout, the classes, and the exhibitors.

The schedule of lectures & workshops is under construction now, and should be posted in a month or two. I'm sure we will be among the first to know where and when the schedule is available.

The WCAF show is great! Not to be missed! Take some classes- they're the best in the industry.

Also, treat yourself to the new Cirque Solil (sp?) Beatles Love show an teh Mirage. It is wonderful and has gotten great reviews - even from Sir Paul.
(You have a birthday coming up - don't you?)

Oh, and stop by EVERY booth and ask them what's new.

I plan on attending as well. This will be my first time, but hubby is gonna be in Vegas for work at the same time, so we're working out the hotel situation. He's at the Belagio or something like that. I think I'd prefer the Hilton so that I can lug all the literature up to my room instead of across town...

I'm anxious to see what classes are offered, I hoping for some wizard education.

Birthday? I'll turn 50 on the 31st of January, never dreamt I'd be in Vegas for that.

I am going. Definitely going.

I want to meet lots of the Grumblers, see what's new, attend a class or 2, and hopefully Vegas will be warmer and sunnier than the Northeast in winter (so I can have some Mojitos with the gang by the pool!)

My sources say there will be more time for education AND the floor.
Many didn't know that the floor was open till 6pm... so the last hour of the floor was vewy vewy qwiet.... so those who were cruising, struck some very valuable ear and face time with the right people.

Getting in Sat night is going to be the smart thing, because there are many classes, and no floor. So by Monday morning, you are an "old hand" at the convention, you won't be fighting your way through long lines at registration, and you're having fun.

Don't forget your Grumble Name Tags, and if you are dealing with a vendor, make sure to tell them that you're a Grumbler. Trust me, the vendors want to know. Even if they are giving you that glazed eyes game face.... listen. That whirring noise is there mind thinking VERY hard.

When you register at the entrance to the show and get your name tag holder, ask for your "GRUMBLER RIBBON". It is self adhesive and hangs from the bottom of your tag. They also have them for HitchHikers, PPFA Members, and several others.

Mike

I REALLY WANT to go!! But, I have to attend the PPFA convention (as a new chapter officer) and I don't think I can afford to go to two shows.

Anyone know of any "scholarships?" Or, is there a company that needs some booth help and would foot my hotel bill?? uhh? uhhh?

please??

Still waffleing a little bit. Why? I am a tipping point kind of person...but when I fall.........
Looking at the money, hate to fly, not crazy about Vegas
Love to meet all of you, need some classes, looking for new ideas......
Last show I was at was the NYC Decor Expo about 3 or 4 years ago.

I guess I'm due

Anyone (female) want to share a hotel room? That would help with some of the expense.

Nancy, if we stay busy with the classes and show, we might not have enough time left (or energy!) to see Vegas! And if you hang out with other Grumblers, I'm sure we'll be well entertained! That's my plan!

Have been every year, it gets better and better. more stuff to buy and more classesto learn how to use it. and all you can eat lobster at the Rio.

Whoa! I'd forgotten about the Rio.
FramerDave, are ya listenin' son?
We can give up the Steers and go after the Shrimpies.

Nancy? Tipping Point? Forget "Vegas", this is "Frame Heaven". And Tuesday night is Limo ride and Chinese dinner with just Grumblers.

Last year there were 39 of us.... Bob Carter has now commited himself and the lovely Ms Debbie, Mike and Andy . . . this year we will probably need that second limo.... and a W I D E A N G L E lens for The Photo.

There is more High Grade education then you can take in. 5 hours of "Floor" if you don't stop for more than 30 seconds.

Great food, $13.50 15oz Prime Rib in the Paridise Cafe...

Great shows, if you could find the time away from other framers.

A nice "Social" one evening.

Did I mention all the nice people that are like family that will be there?

Baer, count me in for the Limo to China!

Will we need to get one for your wheel chair? Or can we just grab you and throw you into the deep end of the mosh pit, down there with Connie? :D

Very funny. You're not making fun of the handicapped, now, are you Baer? I don't plan on needing a wheelchair by then...skates, maybe! (please don't make me be down there with Connie...she's scary! And she'll mash me!)

Anyone ever have a knee replacement before?? In what condition can I expect to be one month after?? Crutches? Cane? Go-cart? Surgery's Dec. 26th. WCAF is end of January.

*thud*

That's me falling off the fence. I'll be there!!
I'm bringing my husband, Jake, who is my not so silent partner. He builds my tables, hangs my shelves and equipment, hauls my recycling to the dump and generaly supports me in every way.

He also enjoys seeing my finished work...."say, is that crooked?".....umm, is that a hair??? (NO!)....."did they pick that color?".....

You'll like him

Nancy

OK, before I commit to the Limo ride and Chinese dinner: I need to know, from reliable sources, the Chinese food in that place is good!

I am not a fan of mediocre Chinese food (or any mediocre food, for that mater). But then again, where else would I find so many grumblers in one place?? So count me in. (me, plus significant other).

As for the Prime Rib, ditto.

90% sure we'll be there!....just waiting for the list of classes to come out before the final commitment.

MIKE - I'm so glad you mentioned "The Grumble" ribbon. I hope that is posted continuously for a few weeks before the show.

I had been thinking how neat it would be to have a room for the Grumblers to meet over coffee so we can see name tags and have a great chance to see each other. Even if we picked an hour to meet at a certain point - say around THE BIG JACKPOT machine just in front of the main entrance. Just me thinking again!

At least the ribbons would help! GREAT IDEA! Thanks to whomever came up with the idea!!

Paul? You have a Significant Other now? Is this new? So that's what 's going on with the Flaming Candle and the Wine and now (awww!) the Heart in the Sand! I thought it'd been a while since you mentioned dating...You little secret-keeper you! (sorry, I have to ask...is she blonde??)

Val:

You are so observant!!

Actually, I was on a sabbatical from dating..... and yes, I am dating now lovely Monica (strawberry-blonde hair, sometimes more reddish as well).

Now, where did this thing about me preferring blondes originate? Or are you guessing?

PS:In the Grumble chat-room, lots of things are revealed; who is dating again, among other things....lol

No, I'm not guessing! (I may appear dense at times, but ctually I am quite observant!) Since I've been a Grumbler nearly a year now, you've made it very clear that you prefer blondes! I remember you saying once it was because you could spot her in a crowd, and someone smartassed a comment about golden retrievers and you took off with it! Remember that? And remember you said you still liked me even though I'm a White Gold and not a Blonde?

And I've been meaning to ask you, with all your endearing qualities, and love of fine wine, the ability to cook as you do, lover of classical music, a cat owns you, smart guy, etc...why on earth were you still single then? But didn't ask because I was afraid there might be something else horribly wrong with you that no-one would want you, and didn't want to embarrass you. Whew!

I've not gone to the Chat Room yet, maybe I should! Would you guys let me in sometime??

Well, I feel like I already know you and many other Grumblers, so I'll say I'm looking forward to meeting Monica too. She's one lucky lady!

Awww, Thanks Val!

You do have great memory too - I was of course testing you and you passed with flying colors!

I am divorced, so it is not that I haven't tried.....

And yes, shows are great for another major reason: Meeting the Grumblers at last!

PS: As for the chat-room, it's addictive - don't say I didn't warn you.

I'm up to the challenge. Good food. Good friends. And good times.
And remember, "what happens in Vegas"...

Val, poor Paul, as truly nice as he is, he is horribly disfigured.

He has this facial growth that is confined to the lower front of his face and woefully undernurished. His hair. . . well, I'm sorry, I know it is a touchy subject with him, but it refuses to act his age; unlike our wonderful pridefully colored crests.....
You can tell that he's ashamed of it because he places each and every hair in a certain place . . permanently. Very AR.

But he DOES have that cat.... and like I said, he is very nice... but he talks funny when he drinks. Or was that Steph? :smileyshot22:

As for your knee, by the end of January, you will give me a good run for my money. The month after my father had both done at the same time, he was up to two miles walking and his bowling average had gone from 485 to 505. And he wondered why he had waited.

Ok, we'll put you next to FramerDave or Rob if you promise to keep your hands to yourself. :icon19:

Sherry Lee, lets all meet at the front door about 6PM on Tuesday. Acid Free T-shirts are optional. Name Tags are manditory.

Food, limo i'm thinkin that sounds good too, i'll just do the lobster on a differnet night. you up to that again dannyboy? i'm not buyin this year.

I'm up to the Limo for two. Bring it on...

Dave the Rio is a must, lobster, shrimp, prime, sushi and on, and on, and on... Gotta love it. My mouth is watering already...

Yes Val, I am totally disfigured.

It happened while I was working with, um, acid, dispatching off a felllow who made fun of my hair, like Baer did.

That's why I wear a mask, a la Phantom of the Opera. Actually, many of my customers come to my shop out of curiosity, to see the Phantom Framer.....

But Baer really told these things about me because he is jealous. And, he has a problem with height to weight ratio (he is 4' 7" and weighs 675 lbs).

But you don't really notice this about Baer during his class: His wit, charm and technical knowledge render his major shortcoming (no pun intended) quite invisible....:p.

Paul's just jealous that my beard covers more than his does. :p

I'm thinking Monday night is a Rio good lookin Shrimpie night.

Paul, in light of your terrible disfigurement, I must say the photo on that other thread, the one of you and Lovely Monica, is incredibly well-photoshopped then! Or that's one heckuva great mask on you! (Does she know???)

And Baer, about running that race...you promise?? I'm a bit nervous about this one, the surgery, I mean, the hips weren't bad, but the knee...well, I really, really want to go to Vegas, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you're right.

Mmmmm... seafood (lobster skrimp scampi salmon crab) and prime rib.... Enough salt to keep me going and 'preserve' my life until at least 110 years of age. It just dos'nt get any better than this...
Val. We are behind you and can't wait for you to 'show us the town'...

I just cought up on this thread..... What are the three of you (Val, Paul, & Baer) up to. You seem to have started your own little thing...

As for Vegas, well, it's Vegas, and I will be there. Sounds way too good to miss.......

Doe's anyone know aything about this guy Carter.???. He s on the WCAF website, but I don't know that I have ever heard of him.........

Where has he been?

Val, Honey, 2042, that is WAY too may posts for lees than a year,...........

Harry a 'skrimp' is a king size shrimp, no pun intended. Lots and lots of butter... heaven I'm sure...

Val, Honey, 2042, that is WAY too may posts for lees than a year,...........

Who says? I've had a lot of questions! Much to learn for a getting-back-in-the-loop framing dinosaur back in her own shop! So much has changed... And I have learned so much here this year....framed all by myself for many years...catching up to do!

Besides, I've tried staying away for awhile....can't.:p

Y'know, I was just thinking...I'm not sure if I really do have that many posts! Seems it wasn't very long ago I was at 1,000, we even had a thread abuot it...and all of sudden since the Grumble changover, I think, ZOT....I was at 2,000 already! Could something have happened then? You're right, that is a lot of posts. Hmmmm...maybe I just have a problem....I'm a serious Grumble Addict. Well, at least my husband knows where to find me at night!!

Harry, she's planning on catching Ron sometime in 2011.

Skrimp is what you do to get the money for Shrimpies ala Rio. Lobster is something that the Windstar lays out by the table load.
Maine Lobster is so bad that in the 1600, the colonies passed a law forbidding Estate Holders from feeding their indentured servents more than 11 meals a week containing lobster. Directing 2 meals of pork, and 2 of fowl.
