I have a new challenge.

I am framing a number of items for a customer and we have decided to take the last elements that were going to be in the shadowbox and put them alone in a tabletop display case/shadowbox.

These are 1800s ladies wedding shoes - very tiny (compared to my canal boats) along with a shoe/button hook and the groom's tie.

I am looking for some direction as to the best way to construct this... I am getting a quote for a 4 1/2" high plexi dome (square sides/corners) with a lip on to fit in the moulding...

Any suggestions or ideas to engineer better?

Thanks,

Roz

Southwinds mouldings has just what you are looking for. It is Showcase mouldings. These are moulding boxes made to fit whatever you need to frame. We ordered a sample of one last year and it was really easy to build. You send them your measurments and they call you back with a price. You get to pick what moulding you want to use and they cut everything you need, and send instructions on how to put it togather. It's really a cool idea! And would make your project alot easier!

Roz,

I popped in and saw your question about Southwinds. By coincidence, I just laid down their catalog and tuned into the Grumble!

Their phone # is 800-833-3268.

I just talked to Fred 2 weeks ago about whether they would be in Atlanta this year. Tell him I sent you and I expect a healthy kickback for the referral!

You can also order the needed materials in length form and design and build your own display cases using the Southwinds mouldings and directions that are in the back of their catalog.

IT JUST SO HAPPENS that we finished a project today using Southwinds box mouldings. Fred is a terrific guy and a great help when it comes to making these things. A showcase box usually is 4 or 5 frames (depending if you give it a door), stacked together.

Our first was a jersey - 32x40 with a hanger and cleat. We've posted it here before so we'll save you the details.

The new project is a fossilized shark's tooth about 3x2 inches. The box(es) are Roma's Palio 1832054 and 1843054, and the corners that hold the glass in place are Fred's corner pieces that we refinished to match the Palio.

Box measures 6x6x4, bottom is linen mat, and we used AR glass. Constructed a plexi holder (thanks to the Museum Mount book in the CPF study program

Nice job, Tony. What made you decide to use a door over the removable top?? Is it easier to get the shark's tooth out??

That's a really good job for a display case that small. Wouldn't mind seein' some larger shots of it.

Thanks! This is actually the second design for this box. After cutting all the frames for a "flat" box that had a lift-off top and laying the tooth down I decided it lacked "oomph" and showcased the frames  instead of the tooth.

Then we redesigned and recut the frames to make a vertical box (requiring the acrylic holder). The door just seemed natural over the lift-off.

I'll post some more in the design forum - and maybe in FBN if they like it :D
