I have a customer's antique civil war oversize fragile tattered silk american flag and they want it framed. I've looked for a textile conservationist in the Seattle area but not getting anywhere.
I'd rather do it myself anyway. After looking on the internet I'm getting differing information on how to proceed. Sewing flag onto organza is one suggestion, another that the silk won't take any stitching and, instead, sandwiching it between uv plexi with a batting for the underside. Any experience and advice and suggestions would be much appreciated fellow framers.
Thanks in advance.

The last time I did an oversized flag (and, boy, did I underbid THAT job!) I used Stabiltex over the top of the flag, stitching through the stabiltex and flag both to the backing along already stitched seams. Took me more than 8 hours just to do that and I am pretty handy with a needle.

THEN I discovered that plexi pops out of a regular rabbet on a really big frame, so I had to add a fillet (at my expense, but thank goodness from something left over from another order) in order for the plex not to plunk on the table when I turned the sucker over.

Oh, you are going to learn a lot from this project!
