I have been using the small debosser tip (Wizard) set shallow to lay out french lines and panels. I have found this to be a fast and easy layout method. Ruling pen follows the slight indention easily with a steel rule guide and also gives a definite starting/stopping point.
When the depth is set just right you cannot see the debossing after the lines are drawn.

[Ellen here] GREAT hint, Randy!

And if you put a post-it note at each end, you don't have to worry about exactly where to start and stop.

You guys are making me want to start selling those GD French matts again.
I did them for years then just decided they were not worth the time, that there were more productive ways to earn a living. Great ideas...thanks.

I've been playing around with this - I get better corners when I don't tape or use post-its. Ink pools up.

This was a big help when I sold an oversized french mat recently. (What was I thinking???)

I don't use tape or sticky notes or anything. The debossed line gives you an easy stopping point that you can see and feel.

A glass cutter (without oil) can help by creating these lines also, for a chap with shakes without an afternoon drink it needing to rule lines in the a.m. it may be of use...

My old way of doing french lines took to long. Thanks for the tip, after reading it here it was perfect for the mat I was working on. And so much easier!

The customer also wanted writing on the mat so I just used the debosser to write what I needed and used my silver pen to fill in.
