I have 9 photographs to mount. They just came in and the frame jobs have to be complete by next Thursday. The photos have writing on the back! In ink!

Normally I'd do a traditional dry mount, but I'll have to do a cold mount because of the ink. Will this bleed through over time even with a cold mount? I'm afraid to do this.

Anyone have any experience with this? The paper is Kodak professional Endura, some are metallic surface, some are glossy.

I've mounted photos with writing on the back with cold and heat. Had no problems other than the time where the customer wrote on the back with a pen and you could read the impression on the front. Oh well....they learned! Now labels on the back are another story.

Same here... should present no problem. To take an added precaution you might also mount on black board like with a newspaper so that the writing doesn't show through.

Also, I would make copies of the writings if pertinent and include in a pouch or envelope on the back.

She said she didn't care about losing the writing.

I am concerned about long term. This is ink. Is there a possibility it will bleed through in time?

I suppose all things are possible given time. If this is of great concern you could always make copies of the photos and frame the copies.

I don't believe this should cause an issue though.

That's an RC photo paper, so it will take a lot to bleed through, but you can't control for that. If they wrote on the back of it with something that will bleed, it'll bleed over time regardless of your mounting.

You aren't going to make it worse over the long term by hot or cold mounting it.

Hopefully they used an archival ink to write on it.

talk IS really cheap(up front)!!!!!!!! do a xrox copy, stick them in the back....takes 1 minute---you'll sleep easier if they dont cause you further problems!!!

I agree with the last post. Go above and beyond and make copies of the writing on the back.
As for the ink bleeding through? Not that I've seen or heard of...

I called her and had a chat with her about the writing on the back. I told her my concerns, and asked her if she wanted to replace the photos to eliminate any risk of long term damage. She said no, to go ahead, and she'd accept responsibility for any issue that might present itself in the future.

diyframer, I hope you are right about the RC paper and it not bleeding through the paper.

And I am going to photocopy the writing before mounting.

Thanks for the help everyone.:icon21:

Not sure if you want to attempt it but you can often remove the ink with a little denatured alcohol on a rag and just wipe it off the back.
