I'm looking for the most authoritative book on preservation mounting & framing of animation cels.

Any suggestions?

I remember reading articles in either PFM, or DECOR on how to do this job... as well as some great hints right here on the Grumble. Other than that... I don't remember seeing any book on preservation mounting & framing of animation cels.

Good Luck.

What an interesting site framanista! Thanks for posting it.

This is an area I don't know much about, but did locate a conservator who does (as of a 1998 reference anyway) just in case anyone wants to research contact materials or display methods.

framanista,

Very good explanation of mounting cels!

Thanks to Merrill Grayson for the informative tutorial site.

(Most of you already know that Merrill is the head honcho of the Hitchhikers website.)

I generally use the Lineco Maxi-View corners to mount the cells and backgrounds to the backing board, and then hinge the mat to the backing. This eliminates the need for hingeing and also makes registration a whole lot easier and accurate.

Please remind your clients that vintage cels are
generally made of cellulose acetate or nitrate and
both materials are very unstable, with uncertain
futures in frames. The modern sericels are done
on more stable polymers and are fine for framing.
