I have a client who wants to frame just the hide portion of a drum. They are stretched over frames like a bodhran.
He would like the skin trimmed off the frames and mounted, so he can use a fairly shallow frame.
I am not sure what type of hide they are, but I am hesitant. Any advise would be appreciated.

Edie nailed it. And I am going to shamelessly steal that explanation!

I have an artist, who some even on this board sell his very popular limited editions, and he frequently brings in his originals painted on some kind of primed panel board and he paints on the middle portion of the board, and asks me to cut it down (including some of the painting) to his markings. His larger originals frequently sell for 25k, though these would probably only sell for a few thousand. Anyway, for a customer who is also the artist, that's when I'll gladly cut an original item down, but on the OP's item, its too unique and unpredictable on how it will react. I'd pass on that.

I guess what I really should have said was "I am doing this job and I need a way to mount the drum tops", not as to whether or not I should do the job.

The owner of the company took in the job and informed the client about the ramifications. Is there a safe and effective way to mount animal hide??

Thanks for your input!

I used to tie dye drum heads and they are a very forgiving material. Usually made out of goat skin, some out of buffalo or cow. If you get the skin wet, soak in water for an hour it will be super easy to cut with a scissors or razorblade and the cut will be nice and clean. If taken off of the rim the head will be wavy and bumpy, not pretty and flat. Just sayin'. I don't recommend trimming it without getting it to a pliable state first, it could be brittle on the edges and crack on you. Hope this helps, if it were me, I'd keep the rim on, not trim, and go with a deeper frame, do a round build up out of foam core and just squeeze the rim over the build up and let pressure do the mounting....
