DON'T buy that new PC just yet.............
this new stuff will knock your britches off!!! Dig it!! 8 OR 12 processors in one big momma chip! These things will have the answers before you finish the questions!!!!!!

from the tone of the article they will actually bring these new ones online within a 'reasonable' timeframe(not like they usually do with a couple of years wait in between 'improvements" while they upsell the populace--1 level of improvement at a time!)

news bytes here

of course, on the more 'rational' side of things, now that the processor will do MEGA work the entire chassie will need retro'd (all those little volts, cfpm's, powersupply's inside there will now need be many times more robust) so that $800-$1500 PC will now cost you $3000 (you just MUST get all those other neat little gagets that your've read about!)and weigh in a 15# ?????????????? (and we will all smile insanely while forcing our money into the saleguy's hands!) :vomit:

I'm starting to save my dollars NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully there will be applications that can "see" and fully utilize 12 cores.

I'm ready when they are. I have a quad core 9550 with 8G of ram and regularly bring it to it's knees. I have 1 24" monitor and 2 19" monitors and can keep all three filled and going. Between Photoshop, other graphics stuff, web development, database development and other stuff I want more power.

I'm working right now on a new site. I have about 400,000 images in about 75 directories. Not all the images are active; only about 2/3rds. I needed to determine which were active in the database and move the active ones to another directory using a php script where I had batch scripts to create uniform sized images and thumbnails. It will take forever to upload them to the server so culling out the inactive ones is necessary.

That took about 5 days to complete.

10 years ago it probably would have taken about 2-3 months to complete.

I'm ready for more power.

I just got a new laptop last week, but I'm not expecting much for my $399. :)

I'm sure lots of people are. But you can get more power today if you want to plunk down the money. Two years ago my daughter worked on a project that involved daily processing of over 1GB of raw data. The server time required was hardly more than a blip of the available resources, and she was restricted to using Midnight - a 2280 processor Sun machine. If they let her on the 3456-processor Cray it probably wouldn't even have been noticed...

Even if you restrict your budget to a single-box configuration, you can get a Dell with two quad core Xeon processors and up to 192GB RAM.

:p
