Ok, had a new one today, need some expert advice.

A photographer from another town about 45 minutes away called yesterday and came by today to talk to me to see if I could beat the price she was getting "off the internet" to have her photos framed in a strange sounding way with a metal frames. She is currently paying $70 plus shipping for an 8x10.

What she is doing is taking photos, and a company from the internet mounts her photos to a thin aluminum plate, including a hanger on the back, and sends them back to her.

What she has seen on the net, and paid the $70 for, is basically an aluminum frame to which the aluminum photo is ATTACHED. The photo isn't actually framed in the regular sense.

Here's the setup. Put the metal frame together as normal. The outside dimension of the frame must be 8x10, not the inside. The frame must have a flat surface on top. Some kind of adhesive is applied to the top suface of the frame. Then the aluminum backed photo is tacked down to the top of the frame.

The frame in essense serves as kind of a box providing "sides" and depth for the photo. No part of the photo is covered with a frame, since the photo is mounted to the top of the frame.

Assuming the adhesive I'll need doesn't cost much, she's more than thrilled that my price is in the low $20s.

Has anyone done something like this? What kind of adhesive do you use?

It has to bond aluminum to aluminum. It must not discolor the aluminum or the finish on the frame. The viscosity must be such that it will stay on the top of the frame and not run all over the sides. It also needs to be fairly tolerant of heat, as we do live in Mississippi.

Are there any other pitfalls I should watch out for?

I use that all the time, actually. I buy engraved plaques from a trophy shop, and that's what they use.

Do you think it would be strong enough to hold up a photo mounted on aluminum that's 20"x30" or larger?

She has a wide variety of sizes that she plans to offer. At that size, I would think that aluminum plate that the photo is mounted on would actually get quite heavy.

It will hold just fine if you run it around the entire perimiter of the frame. The stuff lets loose if it is just tacked in random spots.

Is the aluminum just the typical 3/64" inch thick or is she doing some specialized 1/4".

Yes just standard sign blank. Not much weight in the 24x36 size I buy. Nice clean prepped surface so just wipe down the perimiter with some adhesive release before applying the tape to be sure there is no residue. If you have a NDN (National Distributors Netwok) supplier you buy from you can get the perfect profile for the job. Perfectly square profile with a nice wide face to apply the panel. Well under a dollar.
