Yup............had one in my shop for the past 23 years, and recommend this as your "back up - problem solver" mat cutter.
Just about a year ago, we had a project come into our shop, requiring a mat that measured approximately 16 x 85 inches.......
..................forget the 48inch Fletcher F-2100....and for that matter the 60inch F-2100 in the back room..........we couldn't even cut this on our $24,000 F-6100 CMC. Most CMC's will typically cut an "oversized" 40x60 inch board.
Out came our Alto E-Z mat cutter. Why we always used this machine as our back-up for large mats was simple. --- It has open ends, meaning you could cut a mat a mile long in theory. Make a 30-40 inch cut, then slide the board down further. Reinsert the cutter/blade and continue cutting.
For most framers starting out small, I'd recommend a 48inch professional mat cutter of their choice (F-2100 probably
)......then an Alto as a back up for oversized projects.
You can remove the mat guide on the Fletcher and turn the mat over to cut topside up to any length in sections. I've been doing that even with an old C&H and Keeton cutters for 30 years. When the Fletcher was being designed back in the 80's I had opportunity to talk to one of the designers. The space by the back hinge was my idea so thicker stock could be cut to any length without damaging the from of the mat. I was very happy with how they designed it.
