I had ordered a frame chop from one of my suppliers and it came in much more gold than my corner sample. It's one from the Craig Ponzio collections. My customer is distraught. I've looked and looked thru my other suppliers for a subsitute, but nothing is popping out at me.

But, I wanted to see if there might be anything I could do to bring out more of the "red clay" that is under this gold leaf. My first thought was to use a little steel wool and lightly rub away the gold to reveal the red.

Do you have any advise you might like to shed to me?
This is THE FRAME and my customer lady must have it.
we'll see lol

Can you ask for a sample piece to try out on???? I would certainly mention as well how different it is from your sample.

Other than that; can't help you. But I would definitely want a trial piece to mess up first!

Well, how much more?? The Ponzio lines have a disclaimer on the back (some do, others don't) about a certain variation in finish but that doesn't mean it should look like a totally different frame or a new finish!

Talk to your rep.

OOOO steel wool, bronze wool, Scotch Brite, will all do, if there is no clear coat on top of the gold. Clean off and sealer, test on sample peices, and do less rather than more.

If it's a Ponzi, I would go lightly.

First it WILL have a clear coat... so you're going to be going through it, and about the time you realize you went through, you'll notice you blew right through what every they are using for gold color these days.

forget OOOO.... that will strip the coat and gold on the third pass.

Get a diaper.. yes, the soft and CLEAN one please. Then stop by HD or a big paint store.... you want either pumice stone powder or whiting. You probably can only find whiting.... [if you get real desperate... Ajax but everything has to be BONE dry]

Rub a little powder in the diaper. then take an old school shaving brush (from dime store or antique mall) or a foundation brush..... pounce and brush the frame all over. Go ahead and work it along the frame..... now sort of buff it with the diaper. Keep checking for the red to show through.

When there is ALMOST enough red STOP!

Gently blow off and dust off with the soft brush almost all of the powder.

Now you want either some clear floor wax, or shoe polish (both are carnuba). A little goes a long way.... apply with a clean diaper. Let rest about a half hour then buff.

If you want a bit of that "dust"..... dust down while wax is fresh and buff out same as usual.

If time allows, United has Baroque Gilders Paste which I have used specifically for bringing out an underlying layer. Rather than rubbing off, you would be rubbing more of the red on as lightly or as heavily as desired. Other than United, Cash Moulding Sales in Birmingham also carrys it.
