I just finished this display case and, since trains were the theme for Marc's original post, here is my train theme, in N - Gauge.
Here is a closeup of the case. The carcase of the display was built out of satin black basswood courtesy of Southwinds Moulding Inc., Columbia, SC
. The trim is any frame moulding that one chooses to use. These happen to be a Williamson moulding on the bottom and a LJ moulding on the top.(The cars are so small on N - Gauge that a close up doesn't get very close without losing all the detail of the display case.)
For the rail bed I used tiny coal pieces that came with the original trains years ago to fill the hopper cars.
And Edie, before you ask, the trains are simply sitting on the tracks. The display isn't made to lug around but I could fasten them if the need arose.
