A friend of mine who owns a frame shop in San Diego advertised some framed newspapers featuring Michael Jackson. He then received a threatening e-mail from a foul mouthed person who claims to be a picture framer. My friend sent me the series of e-mail exchanges that ensued after he ran the Craig's list ad.

I thought this might be of interest to those of you who are considering advertising on sites such as Craig's list.

John,

check out this conversation;

I posted some framed, Michael Jackson stuff for sale on the San Diego craigslist, and now I have this mental case stalking me.

(start at the bottom)

Hahahaha. You're so full of ####. No one would pay $1000 for that garbage, much less offer you more than they were worth. Give me a ####ing break. Not only are you full of #### about selling them, you're lying about the "price". Haha. What an idiot. I'm going to come into your store this week and pay you a visit. You'll have no idea who I am. I'll leave a little gift for you somewhere. If you're quick, you may catch it before it spreads.

Stock up on Lysol.

Again, it'll be a much better experience for me if you think I'm not serious.

Yea, thanks a lot there Karma. Thanks to you, the framed newspapers were sold this afternoon for more than the asking price. My customer and I had a good laugh discussing your stupidity. Too bad I don't know who you are 'cause i usually pay a fee to my salespeople.

Go ahead and knock yourself out. I needed someone to increase my relevance on the web. It might as well be you.

Beside, if the frames were worth $1k why use the death of a celebrity to sell them, they should be flying off the shelves without your morbid, unethical, exploitation of someone's death the day after they died jackass.

You must be an idiot to think that my posting helped your stupid ###. You're so full of ####. Hahaha...

I'm going to help your business fail. I've decided that for the next month or so, I'm going to get the word out about you. Let's see how it goes.

I'll start with Yelp and work my way through all of the sites that have your name related to them. Please tell me you don't care so that it becomes more of a challenge for me. That would be great.

Call me Karma.

He should get the police involved to track this guy. Last thing he needs is a psycho. Sounds like a very unstable individual who is going to pay a visit.

I would probably call the police, too.

If there was an email exchange with the real addresses, there's an invisible fingerprint that identifies which computer IP it came from.

Police can usually cross reference this, with the ISP, and get the subscriber's name and address.

At the least you can look up the IP yourself to see the most likely city and state it is coming from. (or even company name, if its on a corporate domain)

Cyberstalking is a federal offense. Call the FBI, and call Craigslist. You want their phone number? Their office is 4 blocks away from my home.

A very nice young woman here in MN was abducted, raped, and murdered by a (I believe he was 19) guy who placed an employment ad on craigslist. The ad was for a nanny. When she showed up for her appointment, he raped and killed her. That site has gotten to be a huge problem for the police.

Am I supposed to pick a side? They both sound like trolls to me.

Except one of the trolls is my friend. All he did was advertise a couple of framed Michael Jackson whatevers, and he ended up being threatened with some sort of biological attack. He is a young, self made fellow, who responded to the potential terrorist with, I would guess, a fair amount of anger. I know if I received such junk, I am not so sure I would remain my nice lovable self either.

Just a good reminder why I stay away from sites like that.

I would involve the police as well, since you just never know.

John, I understand he's your friend. I also understand about getting angry. But maybe his response wasn't the wisest to throw out there for millions to see.
