We have a customer working on a to-be-framed "craft" project and looking for the proper adhesive.

She's gluing grass (think those woven beach mat things if it's been taken apart and un-woven) pieces to a pre-stretched canvas. We'll frame the completed piece to hang in her home. Finished size will be big (2x4 feet or so) and pricey to frame - need to give her some good advice.

QUESTION - we're looking for a fairly strong (long-term, or at least until the grass disintegrates), non-yellowing, matte finish adhesvie that can be painted on. We don't want decopauge - paint the adhesive, let it set up and stick on the grass. I'm thinking acrylic gel medium or old school ModgePodge. Reversibility is obviously not an issue - Any better suggestions out there??

Thanks in advance

Tony

Gel medium would be my best guess - and it may even come in a matte finish. Or else you would have to paint matte medium over the top after the gel dries (or spray it with matte varnish like Krylon).

Take pictures!!!

You're going to get better advised but

AWG I am not familar with Gel Medium nor any other Artist type adhesive. However by shear horror I am very familar with how well Spray adhesive works of Raffia cloth which is nothing more than cloth made from woven GRASS.

You see I had a Interior designer who dealt with purely African art and had a pension for doing a lot of his own framing. trouble was he got this large African Raffia cloth to frame and wanted to lay flat so he sprayed the mount board with Spray 77 or something like it and slapped the cloth on it. Then he decided he wanted it decoratively matted and brought it to me , and asked if I could lift the Cloth . Needless to say Vivian Kistler is right ,"I am no magician." But when I saw it it was holding tight as a drum ( though not completely FLAT as one. LOL) and I didn't notice any discoloring . But in all honesty Raffia is a bit yellowish Green for the most part ( where it isn't dyed another color) so I wouldn't really know. But would anyone else? I also have seen Beach Grass adhered with dots of ( Horrors) Silicone at the base. But IMHO Beach Grass isn't a CONSERVATION Material so is the silicone any worse? of course the job I did was a frame in a frame and the Grass was in a outer Frame of Water glass and the Fish print was in a Clear glass frame with Frame spacers Adhered on top of the other Water glass .Sorry no pictures, but the silicone worked fine for both the Grass and the second frame adhesion to the water Glass.

Hope this is food for thought. while not meeting any C/P requirements, by a long shot. LOL
