I know that in Word and other word processing programs the option is available to "add to dictionary" for words and names not already there.

Does anyone make a program for specific words? When I was editing my dad's sermons, Bible names stymied my dictionary. Any time I do any kind of writing that falls outside Word's simplistic dictionary I find myself growing frustrated. I get mad having to add every single word, one at a time.

I would think that scientists, technicians, artists, all sorts of groups of writers would find equal frustration.

I am thinking that if one could just download, say, a Biblical dictionary, or a scientific dictionary, or, (since I have been working on Baer's latest tome) a military dictionary - that would be stellar.

Does such a thing exist?

I think there are specialized dictionary files for medical and scientific terms. Not sure how they work or where to get them. I just remember reading about them long ago.

And there is (probably) specialized software for those dictionaries that are purchased by the people needing that data. I would guess that Word, etc. are dumbed down very deliberately to keep from stepping on the toes of those making money selling specific language software.

I heard of a neat trick with MS word once..... I think there is a way you can pre-program certain words that you habitually spell wrongly to be automatically replaced. I have quite a few. 'View' is one. I nearly always type 'veiw'. And another one is 'canvases'. So if you have an undictionified word, such as undictionified that you use a lot, you need only type a certain sequence like udf and it will get replaced. And if you want to type an often-used long phrase, you can insert the whole lot by typing the short key code of your choice.

I think. Might have dreamed it. :icon11:

I have noticed that Word will upon occasion automatically correct a mistyped word or two. But not with any regularity - which, of course, makes me crazy!

I suppose there are a thousand things that it does which are carefully hidden within the labyrinth. Not unlike Photoshop.

*sigh*

It should be consistent. Not correcting everything, but if you type "recieve" and it corrects it to "receive", it should do it every time.

Word's autocorrect is fully user-editable. There is a pre-populated list, but you can add, edit and delete to your heart's content. You can have it replace "1a2" with "shut the front door", "@@#" with "Jiminy Crickets!" or "wawwe" with "we are what we eat".

Just remember that any customizations to the dictionary or autocorrect are on the local machine. You may want to see if you can figure out where they're stored so you can back them up and transfer them to a new machine.

I cannot even find where they hide autocorrect. Or Help, for that matter. I have Word 2010. I thought I had a pretty good handle on my previous version, whatever that was - but this new (to me) version is a bafflement.

I have 2013, but in 2010 it's supposedly File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options.

I find that word is very fond of hyphenating words which I don't want hyphenating like matcutter. O.K, I can right click and say "add to dictionary" and that will be that but it works for that session only. Next time I use that word in a different document or at another time it will underline it again.

I have learned to ignore it to preserve my sanity.
