I'm so p!!sed! Some jerk out there got my cc number and is trying to use it. The cc company called me because they saw unusual activity and now I have to cancel my card and get a new one. Probably take a week to get here. So what do I do in the meantime?
It's just so irritating. If they spent half as much energy doing something constructive the world would be a much better place. Grrrr!

same exact thing happened to me last week on my business discover..some one tried buying a bunch of computer stuff on line...have no idea how they got the number as i never use it on line and limited use otherwise.....fortunately my wife's card is ok (different number0 and I still have my visa and amex to use until my new discover arrives.

20/20 I believe is one of the places that did a story on how thiefs set outside in the parking lot of major retailers and with a laptop and a little know how can steal your #'s out of the air, literaly. Seems most of the stores use a wireless system and their are security issues the thiefs have figured out how to get around. The report said, you were actually safer in most cases using your card on-line.

Another caution was to card your card when taking it out at the store as there are people with camera phones who snap a picture of it over your shoulder.

I saw that 20/20 show. Unbelievable what some people will do! Sometimes I need to smack myself for being so gullable. I'm not wireless so they didn't get it that way. I do order online but I'm careful about security. Obviously not careful enough. I think I'm going to call my cc company and check that the call was legit. What if that was a scam?

I have had this happen a number of times. You can request expedited shipping of your new card. It normally arrives red label and is no extra expense to you.

The last time my number was stolen they tried to purchase something from the Epson store. I have purchased from them so when they put in my CC# it associated it to my epson account and sent ME the confirmation email. I called Epson with in minutes of the email and stopped the transaction. This also gave me the thief's name and address in AZ. I reported all this to my CC company with in 10 minutes of the purchase. Whether they did anything about it they wouldn't tell me.

Mrs. B,

I didn't mean that your frame shop was the wireless location. If you used that card at a major store like Target/Wallmart or Krogers, the thief could have been sitting outside in their parking lot and got your # out of the air.

I just called the cc company and the whole conversation was just like the earlier one, so it was legit. She said someone (probably overseas) uses a machine and randomly puts in numbers. When they find one thaat works they then try to buy something with the number and that was what alerted them. Double Grrrr!

We had a couple folks in the grumble chat room recently that had fraudulent charges on their cards, but they were both to the SAME vendor. The company that charged their cards had "Raj" in the name, although I'd prefer not to name the vendor name in their entirety.

If yours were to the same company, email me privately and I'll put you in contact with the others. (Or come into the chat room, they are regulars)

Must be something in the air or water. I received a call from Capital ONE about unusual activity a couple of weeks ago. If I were going to use a stolen card, I'd certainly would have used it for something more expensive than a 1 year/10 computer subscription to Kaspersky virus scanning. No sooner than I received the replacement did I have a brainfart and give the card to a phisher and am still waiting for the 2nd replacement.

RedLabel replacements are $16 to expedite from Cap ONE. They took care of the first set of cards but wouldn't spring for the shipping on the second set within 2 weeks.

Funny that I received a Kaspersky CD today for a product that I couldn't find listed on their website.

The last time that I actually found the person who used my credit card fraudulently, gave the name, address, phone number etc to the County Sheriff and was told thanks but they had no intention of taking any action. Transactions across state lines involve the FBI and they will not do anything unless the transaction is greater than $10,000. At least that was the last story I was told even when you have all the names and accurate contact info.

I would be a bit skeptical of voice mail calls from your credit card company. I get calls daily from a place in Orlando FL that says, "Don't be alarmed, but we have noticed that there is some unusual activity on your credit card. It is important that you call us immediately". This is a phishing phone call and you should call your credit card company, the number that is listed on the card, not the number they leave. Never, ever call the number they leave. Most credit card companies will not leave a message like that on voice mail. They will call you back.

another thing that p**** me off is hta they will not tell you a thing about the outcome of someone using your card..like even if they did anything about it...I had one card that we used in a local business, and a n employee
of that business felt free to charge an airline ticket to California on my card ( I don't know how they figured to get away with it) and NOTHING was done to him and he is still working at the store where it happened...law enforcemrnt is a joke when it comes to credit card theft.

On occasion I receive calls from the cc companies whose cards I carry, asking if a certain out-of-the-ordinary charge on my account is legitiate. For example, when I bought a nice new suit in Nevada, I got one of those calls.

One time, and only one time, the charge was fraudulent, and there were no consequences to me.

Maybe the cc companies only prosecute the slam-dunk cases involving a lot of money. Legal actions are costly, and I imagine some of the fraudulent credit card uses simply aren't worth pursuing. For the cc companies, it's probably not a right-vs-wrong thing, but just a cost-vs-benefit thing.

SB Lobbyists

And, as long as they can charge back the merchant they don't care.

Small businesses need more lobbyists. The credit card companies have way better lobbyists than any of us would ever have, so they'll have better protection for their businesses. Plus maybe if the small businesses could have their home offices in South Dakota or Deleware, I'm sure there'd be other advantages as well.
