In the Hanging on an Incline Ceiling (Staircase) thread there was much discussion re: the appropriate hardware to use. Several types of Security Hardware were mentioned. Rather than discuss them without illustrations, here are some photos from my class describing each type.

The system consists of two top brackets and a spring loaded "lock". The kit also comes with the wrench/key used to unlock the catch. There is no wall hardware furnished and you need to determine the appropriate anchors and fasteners to use.

The Nielsen top brackets engage in the hardware channel of the frame. This means they will work for almost all Nielsen/Clark/Designer type profiles, including the wider profiles such as Nielsen #41, 97, 95, 99 etc. The difficulty of using these brackets is that the hole is so far from the top of the bracket that the brackets can "pivot" when trying to hang longer pieces. To overcome this, we predrill the brackets in the shop and use a 30# nail in the bracket to keep it from turning. The small nail head does not interfere with function of the bracket and makes installations much easier.

Shameless Plug :) This (and MANY OTHER) tips will be shared at my WCAF Class #M229

One nice feature of the Nielsen lock is the oblong hole. If the screw that attaches the bracket is installed a the center of the hole, it is possible to adjust the lock to perfectly fit into the channel.
