A great deal on a barcode label printer:

That's a great price. I recommend checking with your POS vendor if buying it for that purpose, because it may not be compatible.

I know the system we use (LifeSaver) specifies the DYMO model and file folder label specifications. (2 wide)

If you plan to use it with MS Office, Open Office, or the software included, that won't be a concern.

I plan on buying Lifesaver barcoding after the beginning of the year.

I'm going to use it to print pricing labels for inventory items outside of Lifesaver, but still use Lifesaver to scan them.

I also got a great price on a barcode scanner (about $50).

Excellent

I suggest trying it with the DYMO printer driver built into LifeSaver, once you install the barcode module. There's always a chance that it may work with the same driver, and have similar label specifications. It's unlikely, but worth a try! :)

If it does work, please let me know. (and i'll add it to the 'tips and tricks' suggested hardware document)

It will also print barcodes on your invoices and workorders, via the laser printer.

The barcodes are in "3 of 9" format. If the barcode READER doesn't scan them properly, a setting may need to be changed to enable support for "extended ascii character set" or "enable full ascii code 39". Some models have this on as a default, others do not. Usually there are some barcodes you can scan in the unit's operation manual to disable or enable this setting.

FrameReady users can print barcode labels on any inkjet or laser printer, using one of several standard Avery labels. There is a program built into FrameReady to do that -- very easy and convenient.

If you have would-be customers who just want to steal your design expertise and take it down the street, here's a suggestion:
Make barcode labels for all of your mat and moulding samples, and remove the suppliers' identifying information. You can identify them by scanning the barcode, but snoopers would be disappointed to find no numbers for them to write down.
