Wondering if anyone knows of a book about packaging or crating works of art for shipment.

I have a customer who will be needing something crated in a few months.

Thanks,

Brian

There are so many options for packaging and shipping art you need to narrow it down a bit...

When I was at Exponatec in Germany last year I was surprised at the range of packing solutions there were on offer for shipping art.

Not to forget Value!

Does the piece deserve licensed and bonded, climate controlled, door to door service, or a cleverly folded cardboard box?

Also, if you don't need to recreate the wheel, look into the offerings from http://www.airfloatsys.com/

Never would have thought there might be a book on packaging. It's very complex due to extreme variation in contents and shipping environment. Nevertheless, I think good packaging is mostly a result of two things which can't be gotten from a book: Common Sense and Experience. A practical understanding of physic doesn't hurt either.

David, There is a book on preparing art for shipping that was put together by a museum group. I have a copy at my shop and if I remember I will post the contact information about purchasing one. I believe they were $10.00 including shipping. If memory serves, the instructions made the assumption that you had some specialized tools and a healthy budget.

To the OP. Another service I use for shipping art and objects of value is Craters and Freighters. They provide white glove door to door service, though unlike a service like US Art, they don't have 2 security personnel and a dedicated climate controlled vehicle with the piece from pick up to drop off. C & F does handle the crating aspect, so you don't have to.

The foam art packers use is expensive, especially in small lots. There may well be a professional art packer in Albany or nearby. The registrars at local museums may be able to get you in touch with a few.
