I cut all my 8 ply mats by hand, but have an order for several that I would consider doing on my Wizard (5000)...any opinions and how difficult to set up the Wizard, or can it even be done on the CMC....thanks in advance.

CMC's vary....

Ylva is correct in that cutting 8ply on our Valiani is just a piece of cake! Really!

With my previous Fletcher F-6100, I could cut them but it was tricky.

I'm sure some Wizard users will jump in to this discussion, but from what I've heard, the 8000 and 8500 handle 8ply while the 5000 was tough to do.

Since you have a Wizard 5000 already, give it a try!

My Fletcher 6100 cuts them...but you do have to remember to change some settings...and it can be PICKY when it comes to your blade depth being correct.

I also had one small nightmare with a friend's piece when the blade ripped across it at the end of a cut.

I had no idea, though...that a Wizard couldn't cut it.

I have no problem with my Wizard 8000.

The 8000 and the newer 8500 both are "approved" to cut 8-ply and should be no problem. I believe the older 5000 should not be expected to cut 8-ply. It was not designed for it.

Considering everyone is one the "....my brand of CMC can cut" bandwagon...

Gunnar F1, 601 and 4001 can cut the thickest 8 ply available.
I've even cut 12 ply on a Gunnar F1 as well .... with no "manual assistance", no hooking and no overcuts :)

Cheers,

Jared

Cliff is correct. The 5000 was not designed to cut 8-ply. The 8000 and later models were designed to cut 8-ply.

is 5000 designed to cut 6 ply as someone ststed in previous thread????

6-ply

The 5000 was not designed to cut 6-ply. However, many customers have been able to cut 6-ply and 8-ply on their systems.

No harm

No, you won't harm the machine.

You will need to increase the Blade depth and your backups and overcuts.

Start by saving your existing configurations.

Get a small piece of 8-ply to work on in setting up your configs. Once you have it set up as desired, save this configuration as your 8-ply configuration.

This allows you to go from 4-ply to 8-ply configurations in a click, change the Blade Depth, and off you go.

I use to hate to cut 8 ply by hand on my rail cutter.

The 8000 Wiz does a beautiful job.

When you cut the 8-ply's by hand, do you use single edge blades? Like the 1200SE or just a normal 1500?
I have been cutting mine on a Keeton for well over 25 years. I use a standard 1200 blade using the standard protocols for setting blade depth, locking my wrist and making sure my arm is parallel to the bar. I can cut them as well as, if not better than any CMC.
