Can some of you who have a similar Samsung Galaxy offer a bit of advice?

I just bought one today. WOW am I extremely disappointed but I don't want to call it a PoS just yet. Maybe my expectations were too high and this old-fart needs help.

I expected it to connect, and STAY CONNECTED to our wireless router from the same distance as my laptop. NOPE. But then, it won't stay connected only 3 feet from the router with security disabled.

I expected to be able to perform basic functions without reading the manual. NOPE. What manual? The 10 pages of business card size instructions don't even appear to be for this model. What I thought was a quarter inch thick manual is only for RF safety precautions.

I can't even manage to take a picture with the camera because the icon to do so is nowhere to be found.

There is a 300MB software update but that's been aborted half dozen times already on our 1.5Mb connection.

I've got the 10" and it always stays connected and shows decent signal strength for a dozen or so of my neighbors networks. You may need to trade it out for another.

I have the 10" no issues with it.

Wi-Fi connection works great.

I have used it in Ireland, USA and around Europe from home to public connections.

The camera is fantastic, it works from the task bar or the camera app.

We have the Samsung Galaxy Tab (1) 10.1, and my brother has the 10.1 Tab2. Both have been INCREDIBLY reliable, and work further than the pc (even out in the back yard, or at neighbor's house - to our wifi) Andy barely puts the thing down and even takes it to the shop every day.

Either yours is defective, or there is a compatibility (known bug) in the router. You can take it to work to see if you have the same problem there, to identify which it is. The first thing to try is to put a firmware update in the router, which is free and easy. I see this sort of issue often, where one device drops and others do not. The firmware update usually fixes it up. (or on pc's sometimes driver update) If it still happens after that, and also at work (or with another router) then you have a lemon.

I dont see them as a replacement for a PC, but they have their uses. It is a smartphone operating system with a larger screen, and without the telephone radio. (but you CAN use it for phone calls, with apps) It's good for web browsing, skype/im programs, as a e-reader, for email, for games, etc.

Sounds like you got the runt of the litter. I have never had an issue with wifi connectivity on my 10.1.

TNX Guys,

spent an hour 'chatting' with Samsung. The instructions given to "hard reset" the tablet don't work. Power & volume down until the samsung logo appears on the screen, release power button but continue to hold the volume down button until the reset screen appears. That process doesn't yield a hard reset but does yield an "Download/install a custom operating system screen"

Not sure if Antenna "bars" change color from 0 to 4 green with a flashing "Connected to WiFi network" The yellow & green arrows are seemingly random and I would assume that one is TX and the other RX connections and should stay lit since the "Connected to WiFi" and "No Internet connection" messages seem to coincide with the indicator arrows.

Router WNDR3400 checked and there is no update available.

Keep WiFi on during sleep = ALWAYS
===========================

update:
another hour with Samsung. It appears that this tablet has an operating system installed that is not Samsung authorized.

Instructions to hard reset using power and volume buttons do not yield the appropriate response.
Instructions to hard reset from the screen icons do not yield the indicated options.

Ah so it was someone's return perhaps which was botched with a third party operating system?

I'd bring it back for a factory fresh one.

I just wish Costco wasn't an hour and a half round trip. It was in a sealed box inside another sealed box.

I'll probably verify the hard reset process while there before even doing anything else. If same thing, then just get a refund and stop at Walmart for the same item only more expensive.

So much for Walmart honoring their "PriceMatch" TV commercials. The commercials give the impression that there's no hassle and any associate is capable of handling the situation. NOT !

Costco demo wouldn't stay connected via the Verizon wireless booth across the isle, nor would it perform a factory reset via the power/volume down buttons either, so I didn't get a replacement.

I really don't want to be making trips because there are issues with a particular model or particular lot of the same model. Seems pretty senseless to me to have demo models out without any way to connect them to make a demo.

We'll take the weekend to come up with alternatives.

Costco cash and carry price $189
Walmart cash and carry price $249

The store's song and dance was that Costco was a club and their price could not be verified. I showed my Costco receipt and that was not acceptable as proof of local cash and carry price.

Now the Costco price included a $50 Samsung rebate. Walmart online includes the Samsung rebate which they will not honor in the store regardless of local cash and carry receipt. So much for their "Match-it" commercials.

We'll probably order the factory refurb over the weekend.
