6-ply Black Mat?

Good Morning!

I hope all you Grumblers are well-rested after a nice weekend. Here's another newbie question to start the week.

I have been doing a number of single mats, using Crescent's 1536 which is a 6-ply white archival rag board. It's gorgeous!

I wish to make similar mats in black but, alas, Crescent doesn't seem to offer anything comparable to their 1536 in black.

So my question is, can anyone suggest a source for something similar? I'm looking for black, with white core, acid free and buffered, and fairly thick (6-ply).

Thanks In Advance!

Hey all you bevel painters...could he paint the bevel black with acrylic paint and still call it conservation board? I think so.

I hope you find what you're looking for, but if not, the above should work.

(Use removable tape to mask the area to be cut, before cutting on the mat cutter. That's one of the best tips ever that I learned on The Grumble!)

Jim, Bainbridge has what you want #8917. 6-ply, white core, conservation board.
Rising has 8 ply solid rags. I don't have the number because I get it from a local distributer that uses their own numbering system...

Crescent has a solid black too #21115.
Hope this helps.
And, as Jana mentions, you can always paint the bevel.

Jana & Amy,
Thanks for the quick reply!

I'm trying to find a 6-ply black conservation mat with a white bevel. Were you suggesting that I might find that mat with a black core, and paint the bevel white? I suppose that would work, if I can locate a 6-ply black mat with a black core...

Amy, I checked on the Crescent #21115 as you suggested. It would probably work, but is 8-ply and will be considerably more expensive than the 6-ply.

I checked the Bainbridge web site and found 8917. It's listed as "2x Thick", and I'm not sure if that means 6-ply or something else. I'll ask my local distributor if they carry this, and for how much.

Thanks!

Jim,

B8917 is a "double-thick." It does appear to fall somewhere in-between the standard B8517 Alpha and the 8-ply rag, so I guess you could call it 6-ply, though it's not a rag board. That's probably what you're looking for, as Amy said.

Ron,
So the "double thick" B8917 probably has the thickness I'm looking for - thanks!

But I'm confused about the Bainbridge categories. They appear to have "Alpharag Artcare" which are 100% rag mats - acid free plus buffers. They also have "Alphamat Artcare" conservation quality paper mats, including the B8917. last, and perhaps least (!) Bainbridge has something called Papermat, which is buffered and, I suppose, acid free.

Could it be that all three of these lines are of "conservation quality"? If I want rag board, the Alpharag Artcare would be the way to go. But if conservation quality paper mats are acceptable, then perhaps either the Alphamat Artcare or the Papermat would suffice.

Decisions, decisions....

Enjoy!
