I have a 300 year old needlepoint that is stretched on wooden stretcher bars and would not dream of removing it. The piece has considerable mildew, however and I need advice on cleaning it. Most of the mildew is in the area on top of the stretcher. The piece is relatively large, 20x28. All help will be appreciated.

300 year old piece that cannot be replaced. Has value to the owner at the very least.

Do not do it yourself. Have them take it to a conservator. Whatever you are charging for the frame will not be enough to cover your butt, should you ruin it.

Not the advice you wanted I am sure, but it is the best advice you will get.

try a conservator. They do this full time and can take the worry out of this project for you. One of our fellow Grumblers should be able to answer your questions and handle this for you. Rebecca works with textiles out of B.C.

...or another qualified textile conservator. Please do not attempt any treatment unless you know exactly what you are doing. You could destroy it outright, or you could do damage that may not show up for a long time.

If you'd like to post a picture, or e-mail me with a picture I'd be happy to give you some ideas of what I think can or can't be done. The "When in doubt, don't" is always a good principle.
