This evening a couple arrived with a 36 x 48 canvas stretched on 1 3/8" deep bars. They would prefer not to have us restretch. They want a 3-4" silver frame, flat face, deep enough to cover the stretcher bar's depth completely. I found a 1" deep Larson Arqadia silver, 3" wide, but not quite deep enough for them.

Does anything else come to mind? I checked Framerica, Studio, Omega, Direct, and Larson, and then gave up.

I also need a black name plate with silver lettering for the frame. Supplier? I don't think my local engraver does this.
There is also a rush, but we will have 3 weeks.
I have the canvas, so I think the job is mine if I can find a suitable moulding. If not we will just stretch it again on 1" bars. Unless of course, they find a moulding elsewhere.

Thanks.

Well I'm not exactly familiar with what's availble in the US, but that's a fair chunk of wood you are looking for. If there is such a thing I would be suprised. One thing that springs to mind is to use the shallower moulding and fix one with a matching finish to the back. Even use two shallow ones back to back and shave off the rabbet on the back one. There are various ways it could be done.
Sounds drastic, but it's would be easier than using one solid piece, assuming that such a moulding exists. :icon21:

Sign Design @ www.signdesign.org for your plate. Their website is complete with all the info. You can order online or print off the order form and fax it in. The plates are top quality and their service is quick--great people to work with. The black plates with the silver (or gold) lettering are classy.

does the phrase "you can't put 2# in a 1# bag" ring a bell?:(

You could have the moulding custom milled and leafed.

It obviously is more expensive than finding a pre-made moulding but not prohibitive.

I'll re-echoe John's endorsement of Jerry for the plate. He does good work with quick turn-a-round.

It sounds like it will be less expensive for the customer to have us just restretch the canvas. I think this was a trust issue, and I think I can convince them of our expertise. It's just an acrylic on canvas stretched within the last year. I could use a back frame, but the cost is about the same and the silvers would not match. I checked all the sources you guys mentioned below, but nothing came up.

Thanks so much. If anyone finds anything over the weekend, please let me know. Otherwise I will call them and recommend the restretch. The Arquadia frame will save them a ton of money anyway.

Kirstie,
Did you send your customer to me by any chance???? :D

I had the exact same thing just now. Very deep canvas, wanted to cover the whole side.
I have offered to re-stretch as well, as she was very set upon a certain frame that she liked for this piece (but is not deep enough).

Too bad, as it is an extremely nice stretched canvas and the sides should have been painted instead. Customer is going to talk to the artist first.... won't hold my breath....

My customer's canvas has painted sides. It would look nice in a floater but they want the very wide frame. Fine with me.

If all fails: AMCI, Regence, CDNV and other Closed Corner manufacturers could create the silver look in metal leaf to match any color you want, including whatever width and depth you choose.

Price is usually very decent considering the result.

Young couple. The $12pf Arquadia price I quoted them was attractive.
Thanks anyway!
