(July 25, 2011) ST. LOUIS – Two of the nation’s finest high school artists traveled to Santa Monica earlier this summer to be recognized as national winners in the Creative Self-Expression contest sponsored by The Great Frame Up, a custom framing and art retailer. A $2,000 scholarship was presented to each winner by actress and accomplished artist Jane Seymour, spokeswoman for the Creative Self-Expression® Foundation, during a luncheon and awards presentation in Santa Monica.

The national competition, sponsored annually by The Great Frame Up, is designed to cultivate and promote the arts and creative thought among teenagers.

"The Creative Self-Expression Foundation’s goal is to provide high school artists with an outlet to express themselves through whatever medium inspires," said Brooke Kisker, Marketing Manager for Franchise Concepts, Inc.

"The response we received from students across the country was overwhelming, and the talent displayed by the participants was extraordinary," continued Kisker. "A quality in these two pieces stood out to our judges as exceptional."

The artists submitted entries to their local The Great Frame Up stores where they were judged by a panel of local art professionals and displayed for the community. The work of each local finalist was then sent to the corporate office of Franchise Concepts, Inc. where a panel of judges including Seymour selected the two national winners.

• Melissa Woodbridge, Fayetteville, GA, "Surreal Self Portrait" (acrylic, block print)
Melissa is a recent graduate of McIntosh High School. Melissa said "this piece was
based off a self portrait in which I utilized different mediums. I have been drawing for as long as I can remember and art is a way I express myself. I also like to use all kinds of different mediums in my art."

Melissa plans to attend the University of Georgia to pursue a degree in art and communication.

• Jennifer Samsne, Newman Lake, WA "Grandma’s Dahlias," (pastels)
Jennifer Is a recent graduate of East Valley High School. Jennifer is new to art and has only been painting for a couple years. Her art for this piece was inspired by flowers she found in her grandma’s garden. "Since I haven’t been painting for that long, pastels give me the freedom to layer colors and show the true detail of the object I am depicting."

HOLY AMAZING!!!!

This just makes me smile seeing these young kids expressing themselves this way!!!!! GREAT FRAME JOBS TOO!!!!! Wonderful ART! :p

I'm glad you like! I'd like to be able to take credit for the framing, but it was designed and done by my colleagues Jack Culian and Tom Adams, CPF. I did some Path Trace work on one of them to help out though.

In the time we've been doing the Creative Self Expression program we have seen some incredible talent and it's very gratifying to see them recognized.

That's amazing. The second girl has only been painting for a couple
years and is planning to major in ballet. Who knows, though, maybe
not majoring in art will help to protect her abilities. I hope she
continues with it. What a great program for encouraging kids.

She reminds me of back in the 80's, when a housewife back East
decided to take up running. Within two years, she was winning the
Boston Marathon. Since then, I've always thought, no matter how
good somebody is at something, they should stay humble, because
there's always a housewife (or bus driver, or garbage man.....)
somewhere who could blow their doors off.
