Entry #2

Frame: The wood base is Foster #714 with custom compo floral strapping. The closed corner frame was hot gessoed, then bouled with red, blue, and yellow clay. All was water gilded with 23k gold leaf, burnished, and sealed with ultra Blond Shellac. Japan glazing was used on the berries, and an acrylic wash over all. A mix of Pumice stone and whiting was use for it soft “snow like” talc-iness as the finishing dust during a final clear waxing.

The frame rabbit was also double gold leafed with metal leaf and oil size as a conservative barrier against possible off gassing of the Basswood. The TruView Museum glass was spaced with 3/8” acrylic square rod that was also oil gilded.

The Counted Cross-Stitch was turned over two layers of 8-ply bonded with Preservation pure PVA. A 1/8” thin layer of polyester batting was use as a bedding cushion. Stainless steel pins were used to block and hold stitchery in place while cross lacing the back, then pinning was removed.

The framing package was sealed with 3M clear tape as a barrier against possible infestation. The dust cover is Tyvek sealed to the frame with PVA glue. Hanging is provided with two stirrup hangers. Frame outside dimensions are 34” x 17-1/2”

The design of the frame was taken from an old photo of the frame the customers grandmother had on a similar stitchery that was made in the late 1800s. This stitchery was started by that grandmother, and finished by the customers mother during WWII and was hung on the wall as a hanging with dowels every Christmas. The customer had the fabric cleaned and repaired by a conservator and wanted it framed to protect it.

The original design for the picture was a special offering from Currier & Ives in 1890s.

Entry #4

Frame used: - Michaelangelo moulding #24230
Mat used: Alphamat Artcare #8815 (muslin parchment)
Fillet used: Nurre Caxton #630-01
Description of item framed: A cross-stitch of a Christmas angel with a gold moon & star embellishments
Description of framing design: In order to accentuate the gold details of the cross-stitch and its "victorian" feel, I picked out a moderately ornate gold frame and instead of using a double mat, I chose the Nurre Caxton gold fillet. A white mat seemed too stark with the gold frame/fillet, so a yellow toned mat was chosen to compliment the gold accents in the cross-stitch. The 'parchment' look to the mat added to the antique/victorian feel of the frame.
Technique used: The cross-stitched was stretched over a piece of Alphamat Artcare mat which was adhered to a piece of Artcare foamboard. It was pinned every 1/8" along the edge of the foamboard with nickel plated brass pins.

Ok there was a tie for first. This is interesting because neither can win as they have already won in a different category. They are:

Entry #5 by HB and entry #2 by Baer. They did lean toward the more traditional needlepoint but the scores were exactly the same.

Third place (and winner of this category) is entry #4 framed by Twin2.

Great job folks. Please feel free to claim the rest of your projects. If you all request, I can reveal the rest of the participants, but it would save me considerable work if you will identify yourself!

Also fire away with any questions, comments or concerns you have about any of these pieces.
