Good Morning! I am on the hunt for 12' lengths . Does anyone know who sells 12' sticks??
I have a customer who needs to frame an 11 1/2 foot oil. Any and all suggestions greatly
Appreciated!!!!

Scarfing or custom milling/finishing. Maybe Vermont Hardwoods or Picture Woods has something kicking about. Savannah Millworks AKA Xylo Moulding can make up some, as can Fosters if you are looking for more elaborate patterns. If you have time any of them can include something during the next scheduled run, or, if you have money, you can get it done sooner, maybe.

I would do a google search for millworkers in your area.

Occassionally, not often at all, I have received 12ft sticks of moulding produced in Ashland fron Larson Juhl. I would call to see if they have any in the warehouse. Problem is that if you can't pick up or don't have delivery, shipping will kill ya.

With the size of the painting.. they will either want
a 6"-12" wide frame (so stacked mill) or a POC
lath job.

you might find out what they have in mind.

All three of the hardwood companies can turn out 12-16' sticks....
that are finished.... and the regular mills can do unfinished.

A lot of the LJ made in Ashland has some 12' lengths as mentioned. I get some of the Vermont line in all the time in 12' sticks. Usually when I only need 6'.

As Baer was trying to point out, unless they want a 2.5" moulding, you will need more than 12' lengths for this job. In the past, I made up a moulding from 4 mill shapes that a local company stocked. They came in 16' lengths.

You might be able to join two bits end-to-end. Depends on the shape/finish how well you could blend the joins. Smooth and flat - not so good. Knobbly and ornate - you're in with a chance.
To reinforce the join you could fix a sturdy piece of flat timber to the back. Continuous 12' lengths of flat timber should be easy to get. Or build up a stacked profile and stagger the joins.

I once got a local timber yard to mill me a special profile. I ordered 40ft. Got two 21ft lengths. :help:

Thank you for saying this, Dave. I hadn't grasped this point from Baer's post, and it helps me
with a project I'm working on right now. Just gave a quote to a local photographer for gallery
wrapping a canvas 40 inches by 10 feet long. I said that, while our stretcher bar stock does
come ten feet long, just to be safe, he should have it printed at 9 1/2 feet. I also pointed out
to him that, by choosing a stretcher bar less than an inch and a half deep (but it's about three
inches wide), anyone deciding to frame it in the future would have more frame options. I know
it's a gallery wrap, but that still could happen.

Anyway, from what you said, I've realized that if this did occur in the future, even a 9 1/2 foot
image would only allow for a 2 1/2 inch frame at most. Now I'm thinking about calling him back
to explain this. I know that a few places carry longer moulding, but keeping it under ten feet
really expands the options.

Over and out...

Talk to Rob Gulf, Michelle about splicing lengths, he has had 2 jobs in the past month and it is flawless.
