All Poster and Art.com are already featuring the prints and posters. Does anyone have a wholesale source?

I checked Liebermans, Image Conscious, NYG, etc.

Image Conscious has one on pg 365 of their catalog. I think they were once publised by Graphique De France though.

I used to get children's book posters through Peaceable Kingdom, in my area. We still see Thatcher in the shop. They sold the business and it has changed a lot. It seems that most Wild Things posters are out of print. I did find some in the UK.

Tim, I'll check the catalogue. Nothing in print on thier web site.

There is some interest as the movie is to be released in the fall and I hear it will be great.

GDF! We used to buy a lot from them. Now they just make cards and calendars, I believe.

I googled "Maurice Sendak Posters" and came up with a few sources...none of them wholesalers though. 123posters seems to have a fairly good selection, and even at retail their prices aren't out of line.

You might want to keep in touch with rareposters . They seem to come up with a few out of print Sendak posters every so often.

Thanks. I did get some at 123, and some from England.

I loved Graphique de France! Wistful sigh.....

Since there is a movie of "Wild Things" coming out, I'll bet posters will reappear when it does.
I purchased a signed copy of the book when MS came to my art college 43 years ago on a book tour. Years later, when I became a mom, it was the favorite story of my 3 sons. Now my grandsons refuse to let me read it to them because they think it will give them nightmares. This from 2 boys who have all the "Star Wars" videos!
I think the movie will spark intrest in the old book and the old artwork.

Wild Things Shop Window

I hope your enjoy our new Where the Wild Things Are shop window. The photo is on our Facebook page and is my newest blog entry. Be sure to click the photo to enlarge on Facebook.

I should add that they traced it in Path Trace on the Wizard CMC, cut the figures, boat, trees, and then used pastel to color in. I certainly have some talented artists working for me.

Thanks for letting us know, Kirstie. I enjoy seeing the creative
things that you and your friends at the shop come up with.

I hope this works well as a draw for you. :)

I'm not sure that our tiny window is ever a real draw, but we do change it every couple of months, along with art on our front wall. The more people that wander in to the shop, the more future customers. At least that's the theory. Parents are stopping by the window with thier children. Very sweet.

Very nice display, Kirstie. Where did you get the props?

Path trace in wizard from the book. Cut mats on wizard. Staff colored them in. We just framed a bunch. The little ones are selling.

Here are some more framed Wild Things prints on our front wall, opposite the window next to our double doors. They are a bit hard to see at this angle. I still need to edit the individual photos I took today.
I will also post the window display photo here. Thanks for your Facebook comments. We have had fun with this project and we are getting lots of lookers walking in to the shop. College kids move back in next week and, heck, they are young enough to remember the book.

What do you think about a Twilight window?

If you did a Twilight window, who would be buying the
framing? The teens themselves, or their parents?

Even though I'm way not into 'Twilight', this could be
a good idea. You'd just want to keep it from being so
creepy that it would be off-putting to any long time
customers. The one way you could get by with
having it be a little edgy is if you do it as a lead-up
to Halloween. Granted, people don't usually do Halloween
framing, but it might get them thinking of what to do
for Christmas. The only danger about using themes
from current pop culture entertainment is that, unless
you do it in a very unique way, it can seem homogenous
with all the other marketing around that theme and
become invisible to people. Your 'Wild Things' display
is well done, and it will likely seem original enough to
people that this doesn't happen. But you'll have to be
careful about that. You want people to think of you as
a unique business, not one that does what everybody else
is doing. Even if no other frame shops in town deal with these
themes, consumers are so inundated with them that you
have to do yours in a very fresh way in order to be noticed.

The way I see it, Where the Wild things are makes more sense because the artwork is the result of an award winning children's illustrator, specifically Mr Sendak won a Caldecott award for the illustration in that book in particular. This I would think is attractive to people when choosing artwork to decorate with. Timeless award winning childrens art, yes. Marketing posters for latest fad book series gone film, eh... While you are capable of creating a dazzling display with beautifully framed examples will people want to invest in what these would cost? I don't expect the average parent to want to spend more than what a poster package would cost on their teen's latest fancy.

But I am biased. I am probably way off base.

I'd better comment before this gets out of hand. I was kidding about Twilight, but I did order some posters. I am surrounded by Cal dorms. At least 2000 students live within 100 feet of my door. We'll sell them like the Ed Hardy posters are selling. They might bring students in the door. Or not. No great investment. There was a big investment in time made in that Wild Things window. A slow day, a creative streak among the staff to pass the time. Not such a bad outcome. It too is bringing people in to look. We have not sold framed Wild Things posters yet, but we are selling some unframed ones, and almost all the framed cards are gone. The window will stay up through October when the movie comes out. It may stay up until a November Christmas window. Or not.

It was move-in weekend at the dorms this weekend. We had blue and gold balloons tied to the doors and sidewalk sign. What a scene. Students and parents lined up for hours to check in. Then they went shopping. The parents bought more than the students. One dad rushed in with shattered glass, a moving accident, fixed on the spot for his daughter--I sold him acrylic replacement. I love it when the students come back to town. They don't buy that much, but they make the area more vibrant and very very busy.

Go Bears!

I always sell a lot of acrylic glazing for dorms - no students doing the buying, though - only parents. There is a certain age group (maybe 2-20?) where parents are HAPPY to buy acrylic for their kids' framing.

Great ideas, Kirstie - and congrats on the award!
