How is business??

It has been slower than normal the past few weeks. Usually at this time of the year I'm starting to get my Holiday shoppers but it hasn't started so far this year. I'm blaming it on the elections and am hopeful it will pick up after next Tuesday. What are all of you seeing?

GUMBY GCF SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

Up until Nov 1st we were doing fine last 5 days have been really weak.
We actually have had Christmas shoppers coming in since mid Oct.

This happens every four years... I find it to be an interesting glitch in human behaviour. Nervousness creates some cautionary spending of disposable income prior to an election - And then after the other party wins...things go back to normal. Kinda like "the sky is falling".... That and the milder weather in the Midwest, I think we're impacted by that also.

However, the fourth quarter should be strong none-the-less. We are seeing some bigger purchases with custom framing and higher end gift sales both.

Elections are always bad for business. People hate uncertainty, so they "lie low" and wait-and-see. Ordinarily, business picks up after the election is over. I expect that to be true this year as well... UNLESS there is, let's just call it, unconventional behavior after election night.

I think it isn't so much uncertainty than being distracted, the bigger the distraction the more business seems to suffer, an election is a big distraction.

I don't think it is worry or uncertainty either. People are simply not in the mood to do something fun. All everyone talks about is politics and it has been going on for a looooooong time.
Let's hope for some of that seasons cheer. I need it

At the moment I am busier with framing than I can remember. Good in one way but I'm
getting seriously backlogged an having to work all hours. o_O

I'm just finishing a rush job with another rush job to finish for tomorrow.

Then I have 24 little frames to do - all hand-finished and a biggish painting on paper which
was (allegedly) done by an elephant. Various other little jobs to finish up. Also incoming a
6ftx4ft canvas which I want to turn around fast as it will monopolise the workshop.

Prospero's post brings up a question I've had for a long time.

How many pieces are in your workload?

My usual workload or backlog is between 30 and 40 pieces but since October 1, it has grown to between 80 and 90, and I'm having trouble getting it down.

A quick mental calculation reveals 56 frames to complete apart from the ones I have forgotten about.

Some are small and some are not-so-small. Some are not started. The rest are in various stages.

Got three finished this morning and hope to get another six done later tonight ready for the morrow. :D

We have those pre-election jitters here in Australia too. everyone snaps their purses shut and the stock market gets shaky and I never figured out why.

For us a change of Government is not a big deal, no-one gets shot and there are no riots, even at the polling booths everyone is civil and you will often find the supporters of various parties chatting amiably with each other.

We're starting to get crazy busy now.
I've been asked, as well as the part time person, to work extra hours until Christmas.
I already work 40+ hours and we're going to Las Vegas again for 2 days, right after Thanksgiving, to install framed pictures for a company that we've framed and installed for at about 20 locations now in Arizona and Nevada, all security hanging.

I'm glad that I got the arthroscopic surgery on my left knee in September so that I can climb the ladders and do my thing.:D
I even went to Las Vegas to do an installation 4 days after my surgery. ;)

    I like what I do and I'm a little crazy....

We now have 20 out of 20 5-star reviews on Yelp and all 5 star reviews on Google.
Believe me, people look at these reviews and it brings us more business.
Many people like to criticize at the slightest perceived misstep, but when people go out of their way to give a great review, it means something.

We never encourage anyone or offer anything to give us a review.
We don't even bring it up, so all of the reviews are legit.

That looks very much like. Could have been the same elephant.
I have it's name somewhere on the certificate.

But I keep looking at the image and it's quite spooky. I'll post it up.
I can make out things in a sort-of Rorschach way that make me question whether
it was actually an elephant that did it. o_O

I was doing really well for the year and it looked like I would finish out way ahead of last year. Then about 2 weeks before the election business went to nothing and stayed there. Christmas business is usually picking up by now but not this year. Sure not looking good.

I once heard of a gallery owner who trained a pet duck to paint. Well he chucked a lot
of paint on a canvas and got the duck to paddle about on it.

He put the 'finished' painting in his gallery and some guy bought it.

Part of the attraction may have been because he signed the work "Pablo".
That apparently being the name of the duck.

Later on the man who bought it discovered it wasn't a lost Picasso and was in fact a duck painting
and demanded a refund. The gallery owner refused. After all, there was nothing wrong with it. The
buyer liked it when he bought it. No deception involved. OK, he signed it on behalf of the duck but
to be fair not many ducks can write. He never implied it was a Picasso.

    what ya mean?
  39. David Waldmann

David Waldmann SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

Using example numbers, to make sure I understand what you were saying:

Lets say last year you sold $100 and made $10, so you made 10% profit.

This year you sold $200 (100% increase, which is more than profit increase) and made $15.70 (57% increase). However, that is only 7.85% profit. (I know you didn't say turnover doubled, but I put that in there to show that if turnover increases more than profit, then profit as a percentage decreases).

Generally, as revenue (aka turnover) increases, so does the percentage of profit, mostly because of fixed expenses and better cost of materials. However, if you got to the place where you had to add more space, hire another employee, buy other equipment, etc, your profit percentage can decrease. It can also happen if you take on a lot of large jobs bid at a lower profit margin. It doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing - after all $15.70 is better than $10.00 - but if it were my business I would want to know why.

I know my profit is a little down, even though turn over is up, I delegate more now, I consciously did this, I do much less work now to spend more time with my wife and children, because I never met anyone who said they wished they had spent more time at work and away from their children.

I am so busy at the moment I can't think straight. It's hard to maintain the professional demeanor when two women come in together to 'maybe have something framed'. They took up about an hour of my time, but they spent about $700 or so between them. I went back down to the dungeon to work on Christmas and early November a little happier because they are in no hurry.

Well I don't get a Christmas rush so I have got some framing to do today and thats me pretty much done. It means though i can tidy up the workshop move things around and get to know my new epson printer which arrived last week. However January will be busy and hopefully some of the orders will arrive next week so i can start planning and manufacturing them.

This was a hilariously droll book many people thought was for real. Their next book was called "Why Paint Cats" which featured spectacular photoshopped cats that looked like they had been painted with all sorts of designs and further confused the book-buying and cat-loving public.

As to business - I have been slower than usual but still getting new customers, decent orders, and "no hurry" orders so next year looks to be off to a good beginning. November was lousy but December has rebounded.

They are fabulously produced books - their third one was called "Dancing with Cats" - but the first two were the best, IMHO. A real take-down on hoity-toity art criticism.

Well..... Two weeks to go and I'm still getting "I need it for Christmas" jobs.

I have a few to do that I did promise for Christmas but apart from those I have a mountain
of other stuff - some urgent, some not-so-urgent. I reckon I'm booked until well into February.

I am working on 23 small frames (all hand-finished). They all have liners so that's really 46. o_O

One 6ftx4ft frame which I can't start until I get the decks cleared a bit as it is too big for the workshop.

7 40x30 canvases to frame. 2 a bit smaller. 3 small. All the same customer.

And a a plethora of middling jobs. :D

Just had a 6ft long frame collected so that's made a bit of a hole. :)

Just having a brief sit down for a coffee and a Grumble.
