I've been wondering if anyone out there offers float frames in rustic or primitive finishes.
Am familiar with the float frames from LJ, Nurre Caxton, Roma & Studio, but I've been
wishing there were more options available.

Along the lines of this frame by Nurre Caxton. It has a great, matte finish,
with just a bit of wear. I'd probably like one with even more of a worn look.

I suppose one might mill this, as it's such a simple shape, but am curious as
to what else is out already out there. Also, whether there are any floater
frames that have actual design detail on the front edge.

I'm taking a website class, hoping that I'll pick up some tips to improve my shop site. One of the first assignments is to look at other websites in your field and see what you like, don't like. We're supposed to look at some and analyze them a bit. So I "googled" "picture framing websites" to see what's out there. I'm really not interested in the big guys like Mikes, A Bros, AC. I found a few that I like, but really I'm sifting through MANY pages here. Just because you are high in rankings, doesn't mean that you have a well designed site.

Everyone will like and dislike different ones. Here are a few that look professional to me:

These guys came up first. Nice clean site. Lots of stores, so I'm guessing that they have bucks to spend for a designer.
http://www.bigpictureframing.com/

Going through pages...I found this one. Very simple but easy to navigate and straightforward.
http://pictureyourselfgallery.com/index.php

Lots of pages later, I found this one. Just my opininion, but I didn't love the opening slides on the home page, but all in all, it had lots of good stuff.

http://www.sohopictureframing.com/wordpress/

This one ranked. http://www.beards.com/Custom_Framing/

Ok, lots of thinking outside the box on this one. Very well done, but not a lot feminine touches on this site. Very nice copy writing. Jay knows the people to get the job done right!
http://www.artistsframe.com/index.html

Can you help me out? Do you have any examples of really well done indie custom picture framing websites? Can you say why you like them?

To do decent websites, you need to be a good writer, a techie person and a thoughtful designer. Many that I looked at, might have two good aspects, but failed in the last part. Trust me I looked through pages, to find these, and this is just my opinion. I would love to see if you have more examples.
Just finished this up in time for it to be given from my customer to her husband for his Birthday. I have no idea who this singer is, but hey I think it turned out cool. She insisted on mat black mats but I was able to talk her into a frame that was a little more interesting. The album cover is sink mounted and the LP is attached with a clear 2 part screw fastener. The 45 is held in place with 3M VHB tape after discussing different options with her. Since it is unsigned, she doesn't feel it will ever have much value and wasn't really worried about preservation of it.

A couple of months ago when i started dealing with a distributor that does deliver, i decided to start S→L→O→W→L→Y and carefully stocking a few "Crescent Select Conservation Boards". If the sheets are "slightly" warped, or a knicked corner, etc., I don't complain, butttt... A problem? YES! All 8 sheets of mat #C9557 Pigeon 32x40 are all warped BIG TIME! When put on a table good side down, ALL four corners AND the four sides are about 1 1/4" off the table! Good side up and the center barely touches the table. The problem is again CRESCENT'S... definately NOT the distributor. Come on CRESCENT! Don't start that ĈŖДP!

I'm looking at some potential new studio spaces which all have sprinkler systems. After having a bad sprinkler/flood experience at a darkroom I worked at, I'm nervous that they could present a significant hazard if they went off.

What is the best way to store art (in flat files) and ensure they remain dry, even in the event of sprinklers going off? I have one stack of steel flat files, and two stacks of wooden flat files, and will probably need to pick some more up in the future.

Any advice would be appreciated.

My FedEx driver told me today that if you have a business in your home or if you sometimes ship business packages to your home instead of to the business, that you should ask your driver for a OP-201 form. This form authorizes the driver to leave the package at the door and not get a signature. It will keep you from paying extra shipping fees because this form recognizes your business. Sometimes the residential deliveries and home based businesses can be $3 - $6 more per package because the receiver is not recognized as a business. If you give this form to your driver, you won't get the extra charges.

If you are not a member of PPFA and want to save on your shipping costs, well now is the time to sign up! For joining PPFA for a $95 membership that goes through September 2014, you will also qualify for a GREAT FedEx shipping discount. It takes just a few minutes to set up.

For example, I recently shipped 9 boxes, all the same size to Brooklyn, NY. The USPS wanted approximately $31 per box. UPS was about $33. Both were priced without insurance. With the FedEx ground discount the cost was only $18.25 per box INCLUDING the insurance needed. Doing the math, that is about $13 savings per box or $117. Did I mention PPFA has a trial membership for $95? If you need a shipping service like I do, with my example, the savings alone on the 9 boxes would pay for your PPFA membership! How can you beat that? And with your membership there are plenty of resources and benefits that are worth far more than the $95.

So, what are you waiting for?
