I had a customer drop off (2) canvas icons from russia that have smoke damage from his house fire. He'd like to have them restored if possible. Can anyone recommend someone or a company that does this sort of thing? I'd prefer someone that others have used before and can validate the work they do.

Thanks - Lee

Check here http://aic.stanford.edu/ for a link to AIC guide to services.
Otherwise you can contact museums in your area and get leads from them.

Lee,

There are complete conservation services at the Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center 1326 S 32nd St. Omaha, Ne. Phone # 402 595 1180. You need to contact them ahead so they will be expecting you and have the right staff member available. I have used them to look at an out Japanise block print that had some damage. They were very helpful. If you need more information PM me.

I do restorations. Smoke can be difficult if not impossible. If there is varnish, it can be removed and revarnished. If there is no varnish and the damage is on the paint surface it may have bonded with the paint. Good luck. :)

:thumbsup:leebo,
If you are interested in restoration I may be able to help. I do restoration. I also work with another restorer when he gets too much. I've worked with our local college Augustana. I also have done many pieces for collectors in our area. I also get out of town work from up by Chicago. I can give references. I also have examples of my work. My e-mail ArtistABrown@mchsi.com
Once again good luck
