Need for non-destructive methods for plastics art conservation.

22 January 2008 – A museum celebrating plastics design dreamt up by a businesswoman and art collector is due to open on Friday in Naples, Italy.
Plart (“plastics” combined with “art”) was dreamt up by Maria Pia Incutti and is dedicated to scientific research and technological innovation for the recovery, restoration and conservation of works of art and design in plastic.

Incutti has obtained funding from numerous private companies and research outfits and even managed to get a government minister to attend the opening. Plart's scientific committee comprises numerous professors from local universities.

Covering an area of 1000 m2, Plart will house over 2000 pieces from some of the most famous artists working in plastics and will host exhibitions, conferences, creative laboratories, workshops and debates. Incutti said the project arised from a need expressed by the art world to go into more detailed research on non-destructive methods for the conservation of plastics artefacts.

Plart is not the first plastics museum in Italy. Machinery company Sandretto opened a museum at its Pont Canavese plant near to Turin in 1985, which now has more than 2500 catalogued pieces.
