About the end of January 2007, I brought up this topic:

http://www.thegrumble.com/showthread.php?t=23630&highlight=keencut

It was about your opinions about MatCutters. I had decided to purchase a Keencut mat cutter. I found a company that offered it at a very reasonable price. I ordered it, paid for it thru credit card, and was told it would take 3 weeks for me to receive it. No problem. Three weeks went by and i called and left a message. I received email answering my question about the time. I was told it would be three weeks. I told them it was already three weeks past due. They told me it was back ordered so i waited three more weeks. Three weeks later i still did not get it. I called them and left a message.... no response. I emailed them about it... no response. I tried contacting them them for over two weeks! No response. I then called up the credit card company, told them the situation and they credited my account for the amount i was billed BUT said i would have to allow 60 days before purchasing from elsewhere because if they would send it to me the credit card company would have to honor the charge. W-E-L-L.... 60 days have past and i reordered a matcutter from a different company and decided to get a Phaedra 60" Chronomat Maxxium from http://www.phaedraframing.com/chronomat.htm I will receive it in about 2 weeks. This decision has nothing to do with the Keeton Company in any way. It was the seller that screwed it up. Ii contacted two framing schools (one in Ontario) and asked for their opinion... Chronomat was rated #1, Keeton was #2...

I am surprised the credit card company had the nerve to tell you you can't buy another machine for 60 days!

This is a business and what if one needs the machine to survive??

I could have bought a machine, BUT, if the other one would be shipped to me within 60 days i would have had to accept the original charges and settle the argument with the dealer.

I think things happen for a reason. You're probably ending up with a cutter you will like better anyway. Did you get the one that comes in cool anodized colors?
:popc: Rick

P.S. KeenCut is different from Keeton. Keeton was the granddaddy of mat cutters, and, sadly, is no longer around. I have a couple of their hand-operated tools which are still very useful today. Seth (Bogframe) uses a Keeton straightline cutter he's had for about 30 years.

Paul N, after reading Lise's thread about the $12000 scam, you shouldn't be surprised at all.

The only problem with the Keeton Mat Cutters was that they were built too well. The block was solid brass; no plastic bushings to wear out. The bar and rod were chrome plated steel. Clean and lube once a week and they'll last forever. They were and are the ONLY cutter that cuts right on the bar, not an eighth or sixteenth away. Mighty useful when surface groovin'! BTW, I bought the butter used in 1982, it may have been used for 30 years, but I haven't put all those years on it.

My main matcutter is a Keeton cutter that is at least 40 years old. I use no stops and as Seth said, with very little maintenance, it's dead on.

I also have a 60" Fletcher, but only use it when I need the length.

I will predict that you will love the Chronomat. I purchased one 5 years ago and was completely satisfied. Can't ask for a better parent company, either.

We also had the Phaedra system, but should have gotten the double saw instead of single.

I am just happy that some of us share their nightmares with these companies. I had this company (machinerunner.com) bookmarked as well, but now, they are: see'ya!!!!

Remember: Keencut is still a great matcutter but order direct from the Keencut company:
