View Full Version : Chopping a liner with the fillet attached?

I've read here about chopping a frame with the fillet attached, to save steps and get a better fillet fit. I have an important piece I'd like to do this with....today. In this case, it's a linen liner/fillet combination.
Any hints or advice before I tackle it? I'd never done it that way, but I just chopped a practice piece and it's great! The painting size is 24x36.

Have never done it myself Val, but I imagine that as long as you glue your fillet in first is would be no different than cutting one of the liners that already have a fillet attached such as lj411w

Hi Val
Yes I have done that a number of times and it is a convenient and time saving way. You have to be sure of the widths of the filets and the rabbets of the frames they get glued to. They can change slightly over the length of a stick I have found, and that will become apparent when you try to line up the mitres. Sawcutting the mitres are usually problem free but if you are chopping with your morso you should support the filet with a shoe
good luck

What's a shoe? There's the rabbet support, is that what you mean?

Shoe = Rabbet Support / slight language barrier = Location: Williams Lake in BC's Cariboo ;)

Be sure to keep your foot away from the blade.

Val, When gluing the fillet to the liner, be sure to rough up the gluing surface on the fillet so it sticks. When gluing to a fabric liner I would use a fabric glue such as Miracle/Mighty Muck.
Another tip is to get binder clips from your local office supply store to act as clamps. I put a strip of mat board on the face of the liner/frame to keep from damaging it with the clamps.

You must have suspected with the use of that term, there was some mischief afoot ;)
Wanted to see if anyone would comment and voila!
No language barrier here - you want step outside get physical? you fight me you fight my gang. ( I order my eggs sunnyside up face in the sky and a pair of toast ... how you?)

Scrambled. Like my brain right now.
It's going well, but takes a bit of tweaking, the liner wants to roll back, and the fillet is gold leaf and wanting to flake off. Outside of that..........AGH!!! But I think all will be fine soon.

Bruce, how about "Adam & Eve on a Raft and don't forget to sweep the Floor" ;)
And then sometimes for lunch I'll have em, "Burn one; take it through the garden and pin a rose on it"
