View Full Version : Wizard Almost Set up--Then we broke something!

We were so proud of ourselves this afternoon. Wizard arrived, and we got the table built, board up, computer table built, and then...right before Wizard closed at 4PM, we broke the little white plastic coupling device that goes into the moisure trap. We'll call Wizard on Monday AM and get one overnighted so we can hopefully still have time to rpactice before Ken gets here next Thursday to train us.
While Jeff and a couple of our framers worked on the set up, I checked out the Wizard web site and finally got registered. Wow! All the manuals are there. I decided to make our designing as easy aa possible with IF and Mat Designer so first I took Brian Wolf's great design book and had the binding removed. I put each page in a plastic sleeve and put it in a 3 ring binder. Then I printed out the basic templates from the Wizard web site, along with about 100 pages of cut art. I plan to put it all in sleeves in the binder with dividers for categories. I hope this wil help us identify what we are looking for on Mat Designer and IF. Low tech to help with high tech. Anyway, I thought the Wizard web site was quite informative.
Steve, if you happen to be in Berkeley Ca this weekend with one of those little couplers in your pocket, stop by! Nah, we'll ust call on Monday AM and get one sent. Still, I was disappointed in the delay because I am always impatient for new and exciting changes at the shop!

Man, you just missed me, and I happened to have a whole bag of couplers with me! :D
If its any consolation, back in '96 when my shop first got our Wizard, about a week after we got it I was snooping around on the computer that came with the CMC and accidentally deleted some files I shouldn't have and it stopped working. We had to send the PC back to Wizard to get fixed. And I was the computer "expert" in the shop. Boy did I get some flack for that (my boss even bought me a special coffee mug that said "Delete all files? Y / N").. :)

We had deep fun with ours when the USB in the computer went tango-uniform with an intermittent fault that defied every diagnostic available on the WWW for thirty hours.
After several days, and unable to calibrate the machine, and intermittent stops, slow performance, and some completely random noises from it, we got a new head, then a new driver pack, I was in a very dark place, with spanners......... we figured it was a hardware failure because there was nothing else.
To put a fly in the ointment, and a red herring in the cliche, windows had just updated... that led us off down another path, or up a creek.
Sam, at framers corner, the UK distributors was off sick, but managed to ship us a replacement PC as ours was still under warranty- phew.
This turned out to be someones ex-rental and a different SO number to ours, hence no luck getting it to talk to the driver pack
Same day the Wizard servers in the US were down so Wizard Europe in Germany, or Sam at framers corner could not generate a new number for us.
Framers corner email servers had fallen over, together with the telephone system, and we were reduced to calling them on cellphones and trying to translate into german to talk to Wizard Europe (until the SEO called and, in perfect english, suggested that we stop mangling his noble language because he was quite fluent in ours.... but thank you for trying)
When technology goes wrong, it sure doesn't do it by halves.

Boy, I remember that. And we played all innocent with the people at Wizard. Gosh, I don't know how that could have possibly happened...
But hey, it led to you working at Wizard...

We usually blame "mystery" deletions or errors on a lightning strike, or the dodgy french electricity they supply us with here in the southwest of the Uk ;)
Failing that - burglars came in and deleted our files. Or it was a virus.
oops- cat is out of the bag now :smileyshot22:
