I know there are several hundred people looking for cameras this week, due to their purchases at WCAF.

As promised at the show, here is a decent deal for a camera that works very well with this, and many other visualization systems. In fact, we had this same model on display in the LifeSaver booth. I also have one of these myself and love it. MSRP is $499, so this is a good deal.

When you get the camera, make sure you disable the AUTO ROTATE feature in the menu, as well as the AUTO POWER OFF feature.

Canon S2 IS 5MPixel 12x zoom Digital Camera $227.96 shipped free, http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/images/products/mlrg/A0479486.jpg

Dell Small Biz Software & Peripherals (http://www.techbargains.com/j/292.htm?afsrc=1) has the Canon PowerShot S2 IS 5Megapixel Digital Camera on sale for $227.96 with free shipping. 12x optical zoom with Image Stabilization, 1.8" LCD, uses SD cards. Tax in most states. Search for A0479486
Optional: 2% more off when checking out using Dell Quick Loan. Select Credit card as payment to see this offer.

USB 2.0 ACTIVE EXTENSION CABLE (extend16' ea, maximum 5 stacked units)
This is another item you may require for your new visualization system. These will extend the USB cable 16 feet each. 16' is the max USB should go before it needs re-amplification.

examples:
4 ft included cable + 16ft repeater (20' total)
4 ft included cable + 16ft repeater + 16ft repeater (36' total)
4 ft included cable + 16ft repeater + 16ft repeater + 16ft repeater (52' total)
etc... (max 5 repeaters or 80+4 feet)

..and a ceiling bracket to tie it all together: ~$9

Note: There are many types of brackets you can use to ceiling mount a camera. They usually range from $9-$30. Brackets designed for security cameras are usually perfect for the job. If you cannot find one, check with your visualization vendor.

----

If you are getting a new PC for visualization, I suggest WINDOWS XP and not WINDOWS VISTA at this time. Canon has not yet released new drivers/sdk wrapper to support Vista.

I will post a different message for a PC deal, to keep this brief.

Best regards and good luck with your new system!
Mike

...and another solution, which may be more cost effective for folks who have a wiring distance greater than 36 feet:

USB 1.1 Line Extender Kit up to 150ft. via Category 5 Network Cable

This device is a bit slower, but a great solution when you want to run the wire for a longer distance, or through a smaller area such as a wall or conduit. This amplification device is used with a common Category 5e wire. The wire can be from 25-150 feet, depending on your needs. (including the camera wire, the total distance can be up to 154 ft)

The Cat5e wire is not included. See a link below for wire prices..

I have been looking for this camera for my personal use for a while. The cheapest I had been able to find (from a source I trusted) was $270.

Tax brings it to $241.64 but still a GREAT price.

Thx mike.

Carry on.

If anyone else can't find it (I had a hard time too) ask it to search under brands....Cannon....somewhere after page 4, I think.

I opened the Canon S2 IS today and we were all struck by ne thought: It has a lens cap. This would ordinarily be just fine, in fact better than one of those automatic closures which activate when the camera is off. BUT, if we hang this from the track or even on a table mount we will have to literally climb on the table after each use to cover the lens. We have way too much dust in the shop (saw, vacuum press) to risk damaging the camera lens.

Is there another camer which would work well with Integrated Framer?

Thanks.

The dust shouldnt be a problem, and it's doubtful that it will cause any trouble. I wouldnt worry about the lense cap.

Ours has been up there for nearly two years now, with no trouble. We were one of the first shops to adopt the technology, in March or April of 2005.

Mike, do you leave the camera and computer on all night, and do you leave it set to auto so that the flash goes of whe it sees fit?

Now Val, I want to know how you are going to hang it--ceiling or stand--will you cover the lens cap, etc. Curious minds want to know....

Holy cow, you mean now that I have it, I have to use the thing??

I'm thinking, I'm thinking (ow-ouch!). I still have to get my POS up and running yet....but I have a ton of framing to do...it might be awhile.

Probably the ceiling. Handy Husband is also an electrician, and the ceilings aren't very high, 6-ft above the counter. And probably not cover the lense cap, I can't do ladders or climb up on the counter. Thinking, thinking (ow- OW!)

Hellllp me, Mr. Wizard!

Drizzle drazzle drozzle drome
Time for dis von to go home.

Not exactly...

We use X10 technology to run our shop. They are little boxes, similar to lamp timers, that go between your equipment and the wall socket. You set up the schedule with the PC and it sends signals to the devices so they will know when to go on and off. The programming lives on a small controller box, also the size of a lamp timer.

We use this for: Open signs, house lights, music system, pc & cmc monitors, Frame Vue camera, cctv internal monitor, compressor, drymount press and saw power (just in case we forget to turn it off), Perimeter lighting outside, outdoor signs, fitting table sockets, holiday lights, window display lighting, track lighting, etc. Perimeter lighting is on a random schedule that varies up to an hour from the pre-set time, to make it less convenient for a thief who might be planning a break in. These items know our schedule and go off and on by themselves.

Probably a bit overkill... but I do like gadgets! :)

There's no harm leaving the camera on, either. It uses very little power.

For the flash - we use a combination of auto and OFF, depending on the lighting conditions at the time. Most of the time it is left in AUTO, and doesn't fire.

Mike

PS: Val- Jump right in! The water is warm

Mike....I'm framing, I'm framing! I looked at the camera though, still in its box. Nice little camera, that. And I keep looking up at the ceiling, and sighing and telling my customers "Soon, we will be able to visualize that!"

But.....I'm frame-frame-framing! Right now I'm working on 3 moose-hair needlework pieces. Weird.

I need a new list........and another 24 hours in my day, I'm back to going home only to sleep. Long days.........who needs to advertise?? Where are these people coming from?? Right, Gail?

...........sigh.:help:
