I tried a couple days ago to post some low-resolution .jpg photos, but keep getting "upload errors". Same result today. Why can't I upload images? It has worked before, so I guess I'm doing it right.

My accumulated attachments total 819.6 kb, which is fairly close to the limit. Still, shouldn't I be able to add at least one more at 85 kb?

How can I remove some of the attachments? I looked, but did not see any instructions to do that.

Thanks.

Jim:

Where are you uploading them to? Photobucket.com or a similar service?

I can't see a way of deleting uploaded images either! If you click on "User CP", scroll down to the bottom, and then click on "Attachments" you can view both the individual images that youhave uploaded, and the percentage usage of your allocated space; but nary a clue how to delete them!

Obvious workarounds include having a moderator delete prior posts that include uploaded mages; or more likely just host the imahes eleswhere (e.g. a Photobucket account).

Nonetheless there should be a way of managing image allocations!

Deleting a post from The Grumble that contains an image uploaded to The Grumble won't delete it from server any more that it would delete it from Photobucket if it had been uploaded there.

I normally don't use The Grumble upload for images, but I'll investigate and report back.

I'm back.

Click on User CP on the top left of this page. Way down at the bottom on the left hand side is a link called attachments. Click on that. The attachments you are storing on The Grumble are listed and you have the option to select and delete any of them. (CA Framer was SO close.)

It might be time for a Photobucket tutorial. It has gotten even easier to use, it's free and the storage allowance is pretty generous. There are some new utilities from Photobucket that make it nearly Emibub-proof.

I agree that you can see a list ... but (at least for my account) there is no delete option from this screen!

In fact, what I said in my earlier post was a pre-runner to what you said ... "If you click on "User CP", scroll down to the bottom, and then click on "Attachments" you can view both the individual images that youhave uploaded, and the percentage usage of your allocated space; but nary a clue how to delete them! Andrew, do you actually have any attachments stored there?

I have one, so I'll go make sure I can delete it.

I'll follow up with framer and see if that is set up that way or if this is a system problem. I was able to delete mine, but I wouldn't think this option would be reserved for moderators.

Watch this space for announcements.

You know, Ron - I think a tutorial on Grumble photos might just be in order.

I know I have posted several pictures on the new Grumble, but my attachment file contains only one. And, not that I would want to delete it, I see nothing on the page that allows me to select and/or delete it (like deleting the Messages).

There seems to be TWO ways to post pictures, yes? One way is with a URL and one way is from your own computer's files. When the Grumble takes the picture from your own files is that when it forms this "attachment?"

I tried to post Maree's sweater girl photo from my own files yesterday and the process failed several times before I uploaded it to my own website and went with the URL route.

*I am confused*

The only way I've had any luck posting pictures on the new site is going through Photobucket. Otherwise, from my own computer, like Jim's, it refuses to upload, says too many kb's, and I don't know how to reduce it either. So, Photobucket, it is. For me. I'm all for the tutorial too, Mar!

Getting back to Jim’s original query:

My understanding is that there is a small amount of “overhead” when you upload/store a file. When you store, say, a 15 K sized file, there may be an additional 1 K (probably a bit less than that) in the background directory to manage the file.

If you have a lot of files, these 1 K blocks can add up quickly and give you less file space than you think you have.

And getting back even more to Jim's question:

Jim, if you want post any images on the Grumble, it is better to use an external free depository, like photobucket.com, and then just post the link and it will show the picture (there are multiple threads describing this procedure).

Even if you see a button for attachments on TG, I doubt we're allowed to attach anything here beside our avatars, which is understandable.

You actually can upload images to the Grumble's server, but the size and space limitations are much more liberal on Photobucket.

If you were going to post more than a couple photos (in a lifetime) to The Grumble, Photobucket would be a much better option.

Still no delete option .... see this screen print:

Jim Miller

My screen looks a lot like Andrew's, and no "delete" option in sight. If I right-click on one of the items, a drop-down box enables several options, but "delete" is not one of them and "cut" is dead.

Still dazed and confused.

I like the Grumble photo-posting because it is sooo easy. All I have to do is resize the image to fit within the limits given for the format. If clearing the slate has to be an administrative function, I wouldn't mind if you do that.

I'll look up Photobucket when I get to Omaha tonight, assuming the hotel has a free high-speed internet connection.

Thanks, Val. I'll give that a try.

Framer tg, I tried to upload again a few minutes ago, after your email, and got the same "error" message. In case there was something corrupted in that particluar file, I also tried to upload a 50 kb image I've already loaded once before...same result.

Photobucket's lookin' better all the time...

Heuy Andrew - how on earth did you do that "screen print?" That would certainly come in handy!!!

Pssst Mar:

Hit Prt Scrn or CTRL+Prt Scrn on your keyboard.......(it gets copied to 'puter memory) then paste it.

Best places to paste it: MSPaint (which is rudimentary but is on every PC) and there you can save it as a picture file.

When I copied over the attachment directory the file permissions got trashed. I've reset them and everything seems to be working.

When I look at my attachments there is still no way to delete them.

Go to your User CP, left hand side bottom, there is a link for attachment management.

Before you delete all of your attachments I have changed the 1,000,000 byte limit to unlimited.

The 100K per jpg file is still in effect.

Yes I understand where the attachment link is ... but having clicked on it there is no delete option available ... perhaps the delete option only displays for moderators and the like ... not for normal accounts like mine ... I can post another screen print if you want but it will look just the same as the last one I posted!

So, Framer, it doesn't really matter then if there is no "delete" button for attachments (I couldn't find anything either!) if we are allowed "Unlimited" attachments (so far I have one at 43kb) - then there is no problem.

Thanks for all you do Framer!!!

I went to the userCP and deleted it.

Here is the catch. You may only delete attachments during the 30 min edit time. After that you need to get a moderator to delete it if needed.

Not an issue now as you may have all the attachments you want.

Essentially, the same rule that applies to posts.
