A 14 X 18 - horizontal Digital Print, the border is 1/2" and the artist's signature takes up 3/8" of that border space, leaving just 1/8" all around for mounting. It seems that there isn't enough margin to hinge it. I'm not happy with the mylar mounting strips that I trimmed down and used because the mat now doesn't fit flush to the print all around. This problem occupied the sleepless hours between 2 and 4 this morning. I did search the Picture Framing Magazine Archives but didn't find anything applicable to digital. Thanks for your help, Terri

Terry,

Maybe I’m missing something, but why does “the mat now {not} fit flush to the print all around”?

One-eighth of an inch overlap is pretty standard for our shop. Unless either the print or the mat isn’t square, 1/8” should be enough, I would think.

The mat doesn't fit flush to the print because the adhesive on the mylar strips is too thick. I know that I can fill with 2ply matboard to even it out but my question is how would you mount this digital print that only has 1/8" free space.

My guess is you are using Lineco Mounting Strips, or the like, and I can understand how they would bulge the mat when that thick area just below the mylar is so close to the edge of the mat. Why not use another mounting method like t hinges?

Those Mylar strips may be your problem. You can make a similar kind of edge mount by folding strips of thin Japanese hinging paper, and pasting them -- or taping them -- to the mount board under your mat.

This hand-made-edge-strip method allows the pleasure of making the overlap on the art paper surface as wide or narrow as you like. In your case, just a little bit less than 1/8".
