View Full Version : Another LaMarche-hunt

Customer wants to match one he already has. I called the shop that belongs to the sticker on the back, all they can remember is that it was from LeMarche. Anyone recognize it, know it's number, or have any left? I can track down the liners/fillets, etc, but not the moulding. They called it the "blue-tile moulding".
Thanks...

That moulding was absolutely stunning. It is indicative of what made La Marche the leader in design. Again, I suggest calling Phil, but it seems like somebody else picked up that profile. Was it Monarch?

Jo, how do I reach Phil and do you have a ## for Monarch?

Val;
Look at MAX 317501 ( 3 3/4" wide) - it looks similar - slightly darker blue and less rub at the sight edge.

Thanks, Jerome, that looks pretty close. I don't have an account with Max, but will call tomorrow for further information. Will still keep looking for the LeMarch in the meantime. Customer's pretty adamant about "matching", so I'll give it my best search, with the Grumble's help.
And I still need a number for "Phil" and Monarch.

If I'm right, Phil now owns Gryphon. Sorry, don't have a number handy.

Monarch's number is 888-734-8181
I looked for the frame on the website (www.monarchmoulding.com) but came up empty. It is really pretty, thought I would add it to my samples.
Good luck.

Sorry to be so late in getting back to you. Here is the website for Gryphon:
http://www.gryphonmoulding.net/
It is owned by Phil LaMarche. He bought some of the LaMarche stock, I believe. Give them a call.
I just looked at their website and it is drop dead gorgeous!

Thanks Jo, and Carol, I will do that tomorrow. And Max too, maybe we can find a similar one....
I just love the Grumble....sigh

That moulding was originally from Adhisa moulding. I know a wholesale framer ( Concept picture framing ) in Laguna Niguel who had this item copied. They might of even framed the piece in the picture. I suggest to give them a try. They frame a lot of pieces in this moulding for an artist.

Interesting....I called the shop in California back to ask about the cost of them sending me lengths of the "copied" moulding that they had offered to sell me at retail....you know, the "pricey stuff" (I was curious)....I told him Phillip LaMarche sent me......turns out it is the Max moulding! That's where they're getting it. ...Right Hand didn't know what Left Hand had said in a previous conversation and let it slip.
I guess not all framers are as helpful with each other as those of us on the Grumble are!:icon11:
Great detective work, Grumblers!

The "rest of the story", I thought I'd posted it here, but it was in a message to Mr. LeMarche (thanking him, as well), was that I had already called the shop he mentioned in California before he mentioned it here. Tthey told me that the moulding in my photo had been discontinued, and that they now had "someone near there" making it , exclusively for their wholesale shop. I asked if they would discuss selling me, another framing business in a different state, enough of their "secret moulding" that I could help my customer duplicate a frame that they sold to him....previously their customer, who had since moved to Carson City. They told me they would have to charge me retail, but they could send it, and it was "very expensive moulding now", and she wasn't really sure she could even do that.
Today I found out their "secret source" is actually Max Moulding...I've already spoken with Max, the sample is on its way, and it is quite reasonably priced, both length and chop. I guess I can't blame them for not just telling me in the first place that "Oh, we get that from Max Moulding now". I could literally hear the guy turn green when I told him Mr. LeMarche sent me! Then the truth came out.
Tsk-tsk...
Thanks again, Mr. LeMarche, and welcome to the Grumble! I hope to meet you at WCAF??

A verrrrry happy customer!! He finally decided to go ahead with the $880 order, told me on Wednesday, and with Max's chop and join and overnight shipping, I was able to finish it by Saturday, in time for his 40th birthday party. Whew!
Max Moulding #317501 was a very close match to the original one this thread started with, combined with the teal silki liner and gold fillet that I built here, it was pretty stunning when finished.
Thanks to all the Grumblers who helped me track down this beautiful moulding. Without Grumble help, I would've been stopped at the original phone call to the frame shop in California who wasn't willing to help out a fellow framer.
This is the one last week I was asking about advice on chopping the fillet attached to the liner. It worked and I will probably do it that way from now on. It was a large, heavy frame, darn near as big as me, but very satisfying to see how happy he was....he got all teary-eyed when he picked it up.
We have 2 more smaller ones to do for him soon.
I just love my "job"!!

Here's a close-up of the moulding detail, and no, that's not a gap in the fillet miter, it's just the way the flash made it look:

Val, that's about as clear a case as there is of a frame looking 10 times more beautiful than the art!!

Wow! An absolutely gorgeous framing job, Val. I can see why you wanted to get that moulding as the blue tile goes perfectly with the blue in the art (not to mention the teal liner/gold fillet were a great choice as well).
Thanks for posting a picture. You often mention these interesting framing jobs that you're working on, but have posted few photos - glad you posted one this time.

Thanks Karen. Truth is, I'm just now beginning to learn how to get decent pictures with my camera, and downloaded into the computer! I have Photoshop Elements and haven't had much time to learn. I'll post some more some time of some other stuff.
The painting is so much brighter and beautiful in person. The tile effect in the moulding really reflected the scales on the turtles' fins, difficult to see that in the picture. The customer had purchased another one already framed like that and wanted to try to match it, and was blown away that I was able to track it down. So was I, thanks to the G, and I believe it was Jerome Fieg who traced it to Max. Thanks, Jerome!!
