I need to match Bainbridge Suede #4178, Moleskin, but it's been discontinued. I can't find it in any of my specifiers to find an equivelant color, or as close to it as possible. Need the # by this early this afternoon (Pacific time) to have on tomorrow's delivery.

When I call in a mat choice that has been d/c-ed my dist tends to tell me what my options are for replacements. Can your dist help you? Can Bainbridge give you an option?

I can't, sorry.

None of my distributors (I called several!) could help. Unfortunately, that mat was discontinued 6 years ago, and it's replacement has also been discontinued. Bainbridge customer service also tried, and we might be able to come close, on over-the-phone description, but no guarantees. I just tossed some really old specifiers last week....doncha know??

Thanks anyway. Without seeing the original mat, that's the best I can offer.

Val,
just out of curiosity, do you have a computer POS system in your shop? Or are you attempting to match an old frame job from many years ago?

I have been known to mess up by not pulling samples of disc products. My POS system is my "double checker" in telling me that something has been discontinued even though I have forgotten to remove the sample.

I am assuming we have missed this weeks delivery!

OK, you need to match it. So do you have the frame on hand? Or does the customer have it and you're working from a printout?

If the customer has it then tell them the mat is no longer made and ask them to bring in the old frame so that you can lay out the mat samples and find a good match.

He brought in the matboard a couple of weeks ago to see if I had any in stock, I didn't....I remember it was a very light pinkish-tan. He didn't leave it then. Then called on Saturday. I made the tomorrow's delivery (local distributor) deadline with 2 matboards as close as I can come from my memory of 2 weeks ago. If they don't work, I can return them for credit.

He's a former framer friend. I mean, he's a friend who used to be a framer. It's a favor, and this is as good as I can get it. He'll understand if it doesn't work, having previously been a frame shop owner for 30 years! He didn't know it had been discontinued. Needs it by Thanksgiving (he's still framing for family and close friends). He closed his shop a couple of years ago, after 30 years! Just needed a change.

I'm happy to help when I can, he's "one of us", he went to Paul Frederick's school the same time I did, we worked together in his shop for awhile, and he's good people, and would do the same for me if I needed.

Val, if it was discontinued 6 years ago I really doubt anybody would have it sitting in their basements. And if they did, I doubt it's usable!

Like the others said: Find a similar mat or even replace everything with a new mat.....that's a win-win situation....

Val, sorry I didn't get on the Grumble sooner, but I was pretty busy today. I've got specifiers going back 10 years, so I just pulled them out and checked. 4178 showed up on the 1998 specifier. Checked the new specifier and nothing close as you already know. I wouldn't call it pinkish-tan, I would call it tannish-grey.

Anyway, to get to the point, I found a match with Crescent #7141 Platinum Moorman Suede (although it doesn't help you for this week's delivery). Maybe you can get a special delivery or something. I also just checked Crescent's website and 7141 is still a good number.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, Marky. It is too late for this week, but I'll pass the info, and maybe he can put it off (he'll have to, won't he? Ha!) until next week. I really appreciate your effort, and so will my framer friend. At least now we know what will match it!

It helps. Thank you.:D
