View Full Version : How do I safely mount a baseball?

I've never framed a baseball. I have a customer bringing me a Pete Rose jersey and a baseball and some other things for a shadowbox, and I'm confident with doing preservation mounts on everything else, but what do people recommend for securely mounting a valuable baseball?
I would appreciate any suggestions!

Sew down looping through seams.

Please don't sew through seams! That could eventually distroy the baseball. We make a holder for baseballs and all types of other balls that will hold it in the frame and do absolutely no damage to the ball. It's inexpensive and looks great.

Sundry, we also make a mount . . . haven't seen Lois's website up for a while (Lois, what is your site address now ?), but think I recall the one SA makes.
Ours can be viewed here . . .

Here is an earlier thread (http://thegrumble.com/showthread.php?t=4264&highlight=mount+baseball) that describes a number of safe alternatives. It also includes an example that I framed using one of Lois' acrylic holders.

C'mon now, cut Tad some slack. For a long time sewing through the seams was the best, and only, option. No glues, no screws and reversible.
Would I sew a baseball today? No frakkin' way.
1. I'd use a tulle/sheer fabric mount. I'm sure Jim Miller will be along any minute to explain how to do this, although I'm sure a quick search would reveal a few threads where this has been covered.
2. I'd use one of the really cool holders already mentioned made by Superior, Tudor or Showcase Acrylics.

Tulle is a great way to go and nearly invisible.

Thanks Bill, website link is in my profile or the direct 'visit web' link (drop down list from name left of topic), but http://www.tudorglass.com.au > Product Index > Sports Memorabila Mounting Apparatus will get you to these. Baseballs are the same size as our cricket balls, so this clip is perfect for both.
On my Downloads page there is a flyer for these (and our baseball bat mount), plus instruction sheet are there too so folk can see how they are used.
About 2 minutes (one fixing, which we supply) to mount a ball. Non damaging, fully reversible.
They are ~ US$9.70, include fittings, and we can send them no problems in the post (also available for tennis and golf balls).
Shipping runs about US$16 to $20 for a bundle (10 - 15 clips).
We send various clips / mounts quite regularly to framers in the US.
Still can't locate a website link to Lois's site ?
Most likely I saw the clip in that thread linked from Andrew (CAframer).
Dave, tulle does look very good on that job . . . but I did see a demo by Vivian K at an Aussie framing show last year, and a golf ball wrapped in white tulle didn't look clear at all. The material did blend well with the ball colour, but seemed to interfere with the writing / signiature.

Meh, it's an option, not the only one. Maybe a finer fabric like Stabilitex or Crepeline would have done a better job.

Hey Dave, isn't that the ball you showed me with the Lag Bolt through the back? Next time make sure you have Kill Bill #2....
Just pulling your chain. Looks great to me.. but Lois' mount is quicker and you can open the front and pluck it out when the bum turns up on steroids or molests a couple of kids....
