I have a customer who wants battery powered picture lights with dimmer switches. Does anyone know where to get these? Thanks.

Sorry, can't help, except that with the short life of battery operated picture lights they will be self dimming in a few hours. :D Most that I have seen only have a 24-48 hour life. Walk out of the room and forget to turn them off and there go the batteries.

Nuff said. Dead batteries can also leak awful thingies on the frame as well and should not be recommended where power is readily accessible. But if you're still serious on getting them, check out UNITED (http://www.papercatalogsonline.com/ec/unitedmfrssupplies/508/lg_display.cfm?page_number=84).

Plug-in lights operate on AC current, which may be dimmed by lots of available dimmers from retail stores selling lighting.
Batteries provide DC current, which requires an entirely different kind of dimming circuitry, not so readily available.

Good point, MacG. And the art too! Battery acid is nasty stuff. I have someone coming in to talk about battery-operated lights today and will bring up that point.

I totally agree with Jim. Batteries are a bad idea. And they need to be replaced frequently which makes customers unhappy.
Regular picture lights with dimmer are best solution. House of Troy sells a nice variety.

If your customer doesn't like the look of a wire down the back of the picture, my most common complaint, then suggest trak lights on teh ceiling. They even have a new type that uses a flat tape so there is no "obtrusive" track.
Me, I'm waiting until the disco ball-esque mirror and laser system is invented. I'm thinking it will consist of a small light beam box that can be aimed at multiple inoccuous light diffusers that can be hung via invisible wire in front of picture frames. The new low tech in high tech lighting.
