Hello All
I am new here to posting but I have been reading for a while and I must say the knowledge I have learned here is extensive.
I am a beginner when it comes to framing but I am learning as I go
I just bought a mat cutter and started framing all of my sports memorbilia
Now I would like to frame a couple of baseballs and I am not ready yet to start cutting circles. I was wondering if anybody here would like to cut custom mat for me. I wish I had a wizard for this kind of stuff Maybe one day I will.

Well if anybody is interested please let me know

If you've learned a lot here, you probably know that framing a baseball can be tricky, if you want to preserve it. Also, it can be done without cutting a round hole in a mat.

Any professional framer can cut circles in your mats. Have you checked with your neighborhood framers?

A couple of other pertinent questions might be, how do you intend to mount your baseballs? And do you know if your method/materials would hold them securely without damaging them?

Thanks for the replies

As for local framers I would like to give my business to someone on here seems only fair for all the information I have encountered on here
plus the time I will save from having to drive all over town to drop off and pick up I can just as well pay for shipping from a fellow framer and help each other out

for the baseballs i am going to put them in a shadow box frame and I already purchased the acrylic clips(sportclips) from les skinner @ tudor glass (which they are very helpful)

they hold the baseball perfect and with the shadowbox frame it will appear that the ball is floating in the circle cut out on the mat
on the mat it wll have a couple of spaces for the baseballs and for a panoramic print of a stadium

the items I have done so far is just 16x20 photos in standard wood frames with nameplates double matted

I want to start to do other different designs so I think doing the baseball items will be a great start!

Maybe it's a moot point now that you have bought the parts, but have you seen the baseball mounts from United Mfrs Suppliers? These are molded acrylic domes that come with a flat sheet of acrylic to serve as glazing in a normal picture frame. That would be much less costly than a shadowbox moulding.

Also, Gemini Moulding/Showcase Acrylics in Chicago has a complete line of 3-D object mounts made of clear acrylic, including at least two variations for baseballs. My favorite is a U-shaped piece that has two round holes; the ball is retained in the holes top/bottom or side/side (depending on which way you want to turn the mount) by slight spring tension of te acrylic. Each mount scrwes to the mout board by two clear acrylic screws provided (but hidden by the ball when in the mount). Very clean-looking, fast & easy to use, the ball is unharmed and removable.

My standard method of mounting a baseball in a shadowbox is to wrap it in white or off-white Stabiltex, fine mesh fabric, placed in a small nest hole. This mount is not easily removable, but it is the very least invasive -- as it holds the ball with a gentle, overall wrap -- and completely reversible. Nylon tulle works the same way, but the nylon is less permanent and the mesh is more visible than Stabiltex.
