 I don't know where they come from..... another silk

A customer brought in a framed silk that looks rippled/loose. We opened it to see how it was done and it looks like it was stretched onto AF foam with what looks like wide 2-sided tape. I would immagine this piece was tight when the customer got it. Any suggestions for a permanent fix?

I doubt you'll get a totally permanent fix as fabric will expand and contract with variations in moisture content.

If the adhesive is still strong, it will likely be a problem getting it off of the foamboard, expecially if the silk has weakened at all.

You could call Kathy Nanowin at the Manitoba Museum (204 988-0694) to see if she knows of any local conservator who can help you with that - Kathy is the Canadian Association for the Conservation of Cultural Property (CAPC) regional rep.

and assuming you can separate it from the f/c, does it have to be tightly mounted? it could be done in a loose or draped fashion in a deeper or shadowbox-type frame. i did one once this way, and the bottom of this very elongated silk was puddled at the bottom like draperies sometime are. it had a very organic, almost sensuous look about it...was beautiful. and I used UV glass.

Hey, dragonfly, I think the same info in this thread:

applies to this one.

Thanx, for the number and tips. I like the idea of draping it, but it has a detailed image on it and the the customer wants to keep it stretched out. Therefore I believe I'm about to stock muslin. :icon11:
