I ship stuff around the US constantly, but this time one of my boxes did not make it back. One of the things lost is a framed tintype. I have to make a claim and have no idea what a the value of a tintype would be. Does anyone on this forum have an idea?

Nona, A tin type, any way you want to look at it, is an irreplaceable family heirloom. Based on that, you could claim into the thousands. An attorny could help you arive at a value. like any other antigue, it's value could also be based on what similar items are selling for in a retail or auction environment. Using that formula, it may be worth only a few dollars. If it was a portrait of a famous person who would have a collectable value, again, the price would be different. The same holds true if the photographer was famous. If I where you, I would be going the irreplaceable family heirloom rout.

Nona,

Search ebay, the internet auction, for tintypes in the collectors or antiques sections. After using the basic search of items for sale click the button at the top which then shows completed auctions. this will show you the prices these actually sold for.

Ebay can be a great resource for ideas, prices, and designs.
