Does anyone know who said "The frame is the complement you pay to the artist." I've heard it attributed to Degas but can't document it. Kit

The frame in the opening scenes of Bruce Willis' movie "Sixth Sense" is from Larson Juhl's Stradivarius line. (I like to keep my customers entertained with trivia while I total up their order.)

I think that quote might be from "The Merchant of Venice" by William Shakespeare.

The one I have in my shop for all to see is:

"There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price alone are that person's lawful prey."

This is part of "The Law of Business"
By John Ruskin (1819 - 1900)

Here is the remainder:

"It is unwise to pay too much, but it is also unwise to pay too little.

When you pay too much, you lose a little money, that is all.

When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought is incapable of doing the thing you bought it to do.

The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot...

It can't be done.

If you deal with the lowest bidder it is well to add something for the risk you run.

And if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better."

I abandoned Ruskin years ago when I read that he had deserted his wife on their wedding night after discovering, to his horror, that women have body hair. I may have to give him another look. I LOVE this forum; I learn so much from it. Kit

ArtLady - You're right about the magic. We keep a magic wand in the shop to wave over those framing projects that are cursed - you know the ones: The multi opening mat has a sub surface flaw; cut the glass wrong (twice) then find a scratch on it; seal up the back then discover a mysterious piece of fluff has materialized inside. The wand works. Of course those pieces have to be set aside overnight to give the magic time to do its stuff. I'm assuming Zorro just uses his sword. Kit
