Having used Alphamat almost exclusively for quite a number of years, I was really surprised a few days ago at the change in the colour of 8489.

It always was a perfect choice for sepia photo's.
I guess there are a lot of different sepia tones, but the majority of sepia photos that I have framed have been matted with 8489 because it was a perfect colour for them.
The latest sheets I received were much, much, much, pinker than before and might as well be blue violet or yellow green, They just do not work!

I have never experienced such a change in colour of any Alphamat before. There have been some tiny changes, but this is really dramatic. Has anyone else noticed this?

Another thing I have noticed is that Alphamat sheets seem to be getting more manufacturing defects all the time. Bits of rubbish under the backing paper, numerous black dots in the surface paper of light coloured mats, joins in the surface paper in the middle of a sheet, backing paper lifting off!
Has Bainbridge sacked all the quality control officers in the factory? It appears so.
I have looked at the website of Neilsen & Bainbridge trying to find an email address to complain to and cannot find any reference at all to the matboard section. Obviously they think it doesn't even exist so I suppose if it doesn't exist, there is no need for any quality control.

This stuff costs us between A$14 and A$22 and I think for that price I am entitled to better quality and should be able to make use of the majority of what I purchase.

Am I too picky???

Osgood,

I just wrote to obtain some missing Nielsen corner samples and response time was very good. (I never received an E-mail reply or confirmation), just the required product.

Could be colour blindness setting in. Are you over 35?

Wow, lise, now that was cold saying such a thing to another Commonwealther!

Is Commonwealther even a word?

Yes I am well past that milestone Lise. I guess colour blindness is a possibilty, but when some offcuts from previous sheets are compared with the new sheets, I think a person with no eyes, with a blindfold on, in a pitch black desert on a moonless night could see the difference.

I've noticed dye lot changes in both Bainbridge and Cresent Alpha/Rag boards occasionally -- for example -- Tapestry is more vibrant than it used to be. Williamsburg blue has had a few variations. Years ago I could swap out the two colors -- nevermore. I believe both colors have now been pretty consistant for some years. I feel Bainbridge has a better record of consistancy.

For us, the bigger problem -- mat samples fade--some colors quicker than others.

And, as to sepia -- I actually think the sepia's are a slightly different color than in the past. It also seems they are not consistant---due to developer and medium. I believe a lot of sepias prints are now made with color film/paper which makes a "sepia" look. Sorry, don't have all the terminology down.
