A company called Talk America wants me to sign up. I usually brush off telemarketers in a few seconds, but this one seemed like it might be worth checking out.

Based on recent phone bills, they would save me about 25% of my total monthly phone expenses. Unlimited local calls, in-state LD for $0.057/minute, and State-to-state LD for $0.049/minute.

The price includes call waiting, call forwarding, caller ID, and other goodies. Voicemail is the only extra cost add-on.

I'm tempted to switch from AT&T, which has done OK for the past six months. But 25% savings and several convenience features is hard to resist.

Have any of you had experience with Talk America ?

Is this one of those local phone services? That use the existing phone lines?
I had one of those companies "contact" me last year or the year before- talk about hard sell. Yeeoow, they were aggressive. A turn-off right away. They pitched a lot of the same "benefits." (I think it was Allegiance, btw.)
I decided to wait and see and make my decision after they had been established here for a while. After they hounded me for MANY more months despite my orders to do otherwise, they seem to have disappeared. I don't know what happened to them.
Jim, it was not Talk America that I dealt with, but I wonder if it was the same type of service.

Well...

Your only choices are usually

a) The local phone company (verizon, southern bell, etc)

b) Someone who re-sells their services (usually a royal pain becuase the phone unions spite the other company and give their customers TERRIBLE service to make them regret the switch) Companies like this are doing very poorly and dropping like flies, especially now that the local phone companies are starting to sell long distance.

c) Your local cable company with digital service. This is what we use, and love it. The rate is lower, the add-ons are cheaper, and we get free in-state calling.
