Last week a lady came in and wanted to get a couple of double mats for some cards prints she had. She just wanted the mats and would do the frames herself. OK! The mats were a total of $70.00+ dollars. You could tell she was thinking it was more than she wanted to spend. Three times I tried to direct her to a craft store for readymade mats. (She took 30 min to make up her mind then said she wanted them. I told her it would only be 5 min's and she could take them with her. She was in a rush and said she would be back in a couple of hours. ) I got full payment and she left. I cut the mats before her car left the parking lot.

20 minutes later I got a call that she wanted to cancel because she thought it was too much to spend. I told her it was already done. She came back to discuss her situation and I gave her a talking to, nicely, and gave her check back, hoping she would see my compeditor next time.

Three days later she call me and said she had talked to her husband and he gave her an idea to offer me $50.00 for the mats. I told her that that was a bad business practice and I was insulted at the suggestion. She must have really thought I was stupid.

GGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!

Here's my version of a similar story. A couple needed a double mat cut. I cut it and sent the person who took the order back out with it. The customers had a fit and said I had cut it wrong. The person at the counter came to get me. I went out and explained that was the way the order was written up. They insisted I cut it wrong and we had wasted all their time blah blah blah. I immediately agreed to cut them a new one with the colors reversed, the girl who took the order was fairly new and had probably reversed them on the order. They were totally bent out of shape at their wasted time. I recut the mat and sent the girl out with the new one. She then came back and said the customers were wondering if they could have the "miscut" one since there was nothing we needed it for. I looked right at her and very calmly took the "miscut" mat and folded it in half twice and said "sure they can have it, I folded it to make it easier to carry". tongue.gif Poor thing, she didn't know what to do. I'm not prone to a bad temper, I don't think you can have a temper and be a good framer, but sometimes the Framers rage just has to come out. Grrrrrr

I'll have to remember that trick... "sure you can have it..."
I am most annoyed by the ones who ask for the drop-outs to their mats. It's so penny-pinching, and the ones who ask usually have no use for them, they just don't want to let anything get by them.

Well, I finally got a good customer story of my own. The short version. I recently did some B&W photos for them they like very much. This customer then paid over $350 for an aerial photo of the rural town they are in. The photo is roughly 24x30. No matting, oak frame and backed with masonite board. It was framed by the aerial photographer. They asked me for a price to paint the oak frame black to match the other frames in the room. I said I would just price them a black frame and some matting and do the job right.
